Magnolia always wanted to wear a tie.

She liked the symbolism it had when someone would wear it. A person would usually be in a nice suit with matching trousers or skirt and they would just add this sort of intimidation to themselves by adding that simple accessory. Don't get her wrong. Magnolia didn't want to wear one so she could be intimidating. No. She wanted to wear one so she could feel powerful and in control and maybe feel as if she was finally ahead of the curb of her own life, that she actually had authority over the choices made within it. And besides, she saw the nicest ones on tumblr that had images of galaxies on them. Imagine that. She could have power and a galaxy easily wrapped around her neck. It would be too good to be true.

Felicity told her that she could buy two for Magnolia's birthday if she wanted. Magnolia asked why two, she felt that just the one would suffice. Felicity had smiled and reminded Magnolia why she was best friends with her.

"I want to feel power too you know."

     Magnolia hugged her.

She was not really seen as the average Joe. Maggie being very extroverted with people she knew, but hiding and shaking when she would have to simply ask for a packet of ketchup from McDonalds. She wasn't sure why and no one did really but people close to her like Felicity accepted it and did not judge her once. And yeah, maybe Felicity is the greatest fucking friend that Maggie has ever had and maybe she had a few thousand reads on her fanfics, but she still couldn't help but feel this ache of loneliness and desolation in her chest from time to time. And the worst part of it all was that she knew she had no one to blame for it but herself.

She remembered that day, however. The day when it was all worse and she was still living with her mother and grandmother back in America. It wasn't like a dream, like those dramatic scenes in a movie where the person remembers the day they fell in love with another and when color began to leak from the dark gray walls ever so surrounding. But it was still a memorable day for Magnolia either way. It was still an event that made her feel like things could be good in this world for her.

Her mother was screaming at her to do the laundry from across the hall and Magnolia had tears in her eyes as she thought about many things that had happened to her that week. Brandon Graham had broken up with her on that Tuesday (Saying how he didn't really see any sort of future with her and did it by text too), she got a C- on her AP literature paper that she thought she wrote so well, got called stupid or babo  by her grandmother twice when she dropped her glass of milk on the floor by accident, saw how her father didn't email her again, and was then getting yelled at in an angered tone to put her clothes in the wash. She felt like her life was in absolute ruins.

Her hands were shaking and she was sniffling so much, trying not to cry. Her grandmother used to tell her how crying wasn't a trait that men liked and that it was rather an annoying thing to see in general and Magnolia was just so tired of disappointing people so she always tried holding back. She didn't want to be annoying. Not again. So she did her laundry, her long, raven black hair down and hiding her face from everything just in case anyone would spot her flushed cheeks and glossed eyes, and then went to the only place that could distract her for a while.

     The internet.

That's when she saw them for the very first time. She was on Tumblr, scrolling down her dashboard and looking at all the very humorous posts that included funny viral animal videos and delicious food that you could only really find in other countries and saw a picture of five young looking guys that seemed to be smiling directly at her. She found herself smiling back too and when she saw how there was a caption at the bottom of the image, saying the name of their band, she curiously googled them. And the next thing you know, it was twelve in the morning and her stomach was hurting from how much she was laughing at their antics, at how absolutely genuine these human beings were.
