Chapter 15 - Her Confusion, My Illusion

December, 1974.

I passed my hand across the bed, but I did not feel anyone. I sat up in bed and looked around. The room was still guarding the silence of the night.

Curious I walked out of the room and at the same time I set foot in the hall I heard the sad symphony that ran through the house. The unmistakable sound of the piano sounded by runners, but no voice to follow. Did so many years I had not heard her play the piano that I had forgotten that she could do it.

I began to be guided by the music, until you reach the room where the melody flowed. I stopped in the doorway and watched her.

Alice had a cigarette between her lips, thus being almost hidden behind the smoke. I could only see part of her face, the other party had sito taken by the darkness. She was so lost in the music and her own thoughts did not even notice I was there.

- I had forgotten that you can do this. - I muttered. She looked surprised for me.

- I do not know. - She replied softly.

- It was Roger who gave you this piano?

- It was Penelope. - She lowered her head. - I wake you?

- Sort of. - I smiled. - But I would not have agreed if you were on the other side of the bed.

- I went to see the snow. - She smiled. - I've always liked to do this.

- Rosemary invited us to dinner at her house. - I passed hands through my hair, probably making it more messy than it already was. - You want to go?

- Rejecting a request from her? - Alice said quietly. - Furthermore, it will be a good opportunity for you to talk to your mother.

- I was not thinking about her. - I whispered.

- Do not be silly! - She warned me. - Roger's mother was the devil with him, but he still visits the grave of her

- She does not like me. - I replied. - Much less than you.

- It costs nothing to try. - She walked toward me . - She is your mother, be thankful for it. I never had the opportunity to meet my mother.

- If today was your Penelope here and now asking for your forgiveness... - I looked closely at her. - Would you forgive her?

- No, because she did nothing. - Alice lowered her head. - The fault was Christopher.

- What about him? Would you forgive him?

- I do not know. - She whispered.

- So I do not know about my mother. - I said. - But let's forget that for now.

- And what you want to talk? - She asked.

- Want to get out to see the lake? - I asked softly. - Must be very beautiful.

- And cold. - She left the house laughing.

I stood to hear the nervous laughter of her, will she... - Did something happen? - I asked suspiciously.

- No. - She replied calmly. - Why?

- I will answer you with another question. - I did the same steps she. - Why are you avoiding me?
