Maya's Pov

I hate school. The only good thing about school is seeing my friends. But other than that, I hate everything about it.

When school ends, my friends and I usually go and hang out at Topanga's. We have a pretty good group.

F: Homework time!

M: I hate how much you love school.

F: At least I don't wear turtle necks anymore.

M: Fair point.

R: There was nothing wrong with your turtle necks, Farkle.

F: I got bullied for them.

L: Yeah, by a stupid kid who was jealous of you.

Z: Hold up. Farkle got bullied for wearing turtle necks.

M: Yeah, he hid in the janitors closet for 3 days.

Z: Alrighty then.

M: You know, I never got to beat that kid up.

I started to get up and walk for the door when Lucas decided to stop me.

L: Maya, sit down!

M: Make me.

I just stood there as Lucas picked me up and put me back in my seat. I tried not to wince at the pain of him grabbing me but i think i failed when everyone looked up at me.

L: Are you okay? I barely touched you.

M: Uh, yeah, I'm fine.

Z: You don't sound fine.

M: I'm fine, okay.

I got up again and glared at him. Then I saw the time and I almost screamed.

R: What?

Z: Good lord, you didn't even scream, and that was still super loud.

M: Sorry. I gotta go home. I'm super late.

L: It's 4:30, we're normally here till like 6 every day.

M: Sorry!

I ran out the door, and Lucas ran after me and grabbed my arm.

L: Maya, what's going on with you?

M: What do you mean?

L: You've been acting really weird ever since your mom started getting shorter shifts at the diner.

M: I have no idea what you're talking about.

L: Maya, it's okay if you need someone to talk to.

M: I'm fine! My mom's with Shawn now. She wanted to get shorter shifts so she could be with him more.

L: I didn't ask about your mother. I asked about you.

M: I'm fine, Huckleberry, I promise.

L: Are you sure?

M: Yes.

After that, I just walked away. He didn't need to know why I was going home.

Lucas's Pov

Maya's been acting really weird lately. She's started hanging out with us less, having to be home really early after school, and talking a lot less.

We all have detention after school tomorrow because Mr. Matthers was late, and Maya started going crazy, along with Riley. Honestly, though, I hate to say this, but I think I'm starting to like Maya. More than a friend. I can't say anything, though, because I don't want to hurt Riley.

The next day

Maya's Pov

I went into Riley's room from her window to get her for school. I was very tired because I got no sleep.

R: You good Peaches?

M: Yeah, I'm fine. Why?

R: Lucas said you were acting weird yesterday.

M: Of course he did.

R: What's the dried red stuff on your hand.

M: *Quietly* Shit

R: What?

M: It's paint.

R: Oh, okay.

We left for school, and as soon as I saw Lucas, I wanted to kill him. But I didn't. I waited until Matthews left us alone during detention and gave him a very mean look.

L: What's that look for?

M: Idk, why don't you tell me Hop along.

L: What did I do?

I grabbed his shirt and dragged him into the hallway.

M: WHY WOULD YOU TELL RILEY I'M ACTING WEIRD?

L: Because you are.

M: Yeah, well, she doesn't need to know that. Now she thinks something is wrong with me.

L: Maya there is.

M: Like what.

L: All of a sudden, you can never hang out. You're super quiet. You always seem nervous, and you're super tired all the time.

M: There's just a lot of stuff going on at home right now.

Lucas's Pov

Maya looked like she was about to cry. She never cries. I've known her for 2 years and I've never seen her cry. She went and sat on the bench and put her head in her hands.

L: Maya, I'm sorry if I was too pushy. I wasn't trying to.

She looked up at me softly, crying. I put my arms around her, and she cried into my shoulder. She eventually looked up at me, and I noticed something I didn't think I was supposed to notice.

L: Maya...

M: What?

L: Why do you have a black eye?

M: I don't?

L: Yes, you do.

Maya got up and started pacing, walking up and down the stairs until eventually she slipped walking down.

M: OW!

L: Maya! Are you okay?

M: No, I think I sprained it.

She started crying really hard, and I ran into the classroom to get Riley, Zay, and Farkle.

R: What happened?

L: She slipped and sprained her ankle.

Z: Yeah, but she's crying.

L: She's overwhelmed.

F: Why does she have a black eye? What did you do?

L: Me!? I didn't do anything.

R: Well, she didn't have one earlier.

M: I put makeup on to cover it. Ranger Rick didn't do anything.

L: You sprained your ankle, and you're still calling me names?

M: Always Sundance.

Maya smiled, but that quickly faded as she tried to get up and immediately fell back down, causing her to just break down in tears. I went and sat next to her, and she cried into my shoulder. Riley looked really jealous.

R: Let's get you home, Maya.

Farkle and I helped Maya walk while Riley and Zay walked a little in front of us.

Nobody's Pov

R: Why did you have red paint on your hand earlier, Maya?

Lucas and Farkle just looked at Maya really concerned. Remembering "the night."

L: Maya, you promised.

Maya just looked down and stayed silent.
