Girl Meets Silent

In class on Monday

Mr. Matthews was teaching a lesson on lying. Maya was stressing out because she still needed to tell Riley about what happened with Lucas. Charlie wrote a note and had people pass it to Riley.

M: Riley, something happened between me and Lucas.

L: Oh boy.

Riley looked at them and smiled. Then she turned around and looked at Charlie.

R: Yes, Charlie, I will go out with you.

M: Riley.

R: What?

M: We need to talk about this.

R: There's nothing to talk about.

M: You know, that actually reminds me of something I need to prove to Sundance.

Lucas looked at Maya with a worried expression.

L: Maya, you don't have to do this.

M: You're right, I don't have to, but I want to.

L: Maya.

M: Raise your hand if you want me to never talk again.

Everyone except for Riley, Lucas, Zay, and Farkle raised their hands. Mr. Matthews wasn't in there to stop the situation either. He had gone to print some paper. Maya gave a thumbs up and put her head down on her desk. Mr. Matthews came back in a few minutes later.

C: Alright, so today we are starting a project. It's going to be called the partner project. You are going to be assigned a partner and have to work with your partner to get a good grade. You will have to get to know your partner better and take notes about them. This is not something you will present, but you will turn it in to me. The partners will be Zay and Charlie, Riley and Farkle, Maya, and Lucas.

R: But Daddy, Maya, and I are always partners.

C: Not this time, kiddo.

Mr. Matthews continued assigning partners, and just as he finished, the bell rang.

C: Maya, can I talk to you?

Maya walked over to him but didn't say anything.

C: What's going on with you? You didn't talk most of the class, and you didn't say anything when I paired you up with Lucas.

She just looked at him and smiled.

C: Maya, is something going on?

She shook her head and saw Lucas waiting for her sense they had their next class together.

C: Go, don't be late. I'll talk to you later.

L: What did Mr. Matthews want?

Maya didn't say anything. She just kept walking to class.

L: Are you actually not gonna talk.

She shook her head and smiled. Lucas gave her a disappointed look, and they walked to class in silence.

Maya didn't talk the rest of the day. They went to Topanga's after school to study for the project.

L: Maya, you're going to have to talk to do this project.

Maya wrote something down on a piece of paper and handed it to Lucas

I'm not talking. I'll just write stuff down on paper. The class voted, and that's that.

L: I'm gonna get you to talk by the end of this week.

She smiled and shook her head. She gave him a look that said, "Not gonna happen."

L: Want me to go to your place later to work on it?

She nodded her head, and they got to work. Every once in a while, Lucas would catch Maya looking at him. He found it cute and funny. He had a plan, but he wasn't sure how to make it happen. Then he got an idea.
