Mays POV:
When I woke up, the sun was shining down into the metal grates over the window dugouts. Tony is already up. He's carving his name into the back wall, since it's his first time in the basement.

I decide to go see how he's going with it. When I get over to him, he's just finishing up.

"What did you do to be put down here?" I ask him once he's finished.

"I took a beating for Gus." Now that I see him in full daylight, he's in a rough shape. A few small bruises line his jaw line and his left eye is big and puffy from being punched.

His right hand has a small bandage wrapped around some of his fingers. All of this because I was adopted and couldn't take care of my own little brother?

"How is he? Gus, I mean." I ask to break the silence.

"Gone. He was adopted one day after you." My heart just shattered into a million pieces. My little Gus, out on his own.

"Don't worry though. They're good people." Tony added so the end so I didn't flip out. Too late.

"What do you mean he was adopted?! Where did he go?" I ask in a rush. I need to find Gus. Were not supposed to be separated. I know I was just adopted without him, but now we're both adopted to different people.

"May you don't und-" he was cut off by a little pebble falling down the window well.

A few more small rocks fall, and finally, feet land on the ground. The person ducks down to see into the basement. Tony and I have completely stopped talking and are focused on the window.

"May is that you?" An unforgettable Canadian accent asks.

"Shawn!" I whisper yell and run over to the window ledge.

"Shawn what are you doing here?" I ask looking up at him. My hero.

"I have to go soon, but I just wanted to see you." I stuck my finger through the metal grates and he looped it with his own.

"We have a court date set to get you back. Its in two days, be ready because it's not looking too good. And because you're a minor, they might not give you a say in the situation." He sighs and twirls out fingers together staring at them intently.

"Well that's not a problem though right? Dads lawyers are going to win and I'll be back at home in no time. Right?" I half ask him half tell him.

"I don't know. But I hope so, things just aren't the same at home without you." He assures me. Shawn is about to go on when the basement door opens. Footsteps begin to creep down the stairs and Shawn looks frightened for his life.

"I can't be caught! They'll send me back to Canada and we'll loose the case for sure!" He whispers to me. In a flash he's gone. Out of the little sun hole forever.

"May! Tony! Come upstairs now! It's time for a little embarrassment for your behavior."

Shawns POV:
"May! Tony! Come upstairs now! It's time for a little embarrassment for your behavior." I hear Ms. Sheafer call from outside.

I run around to the front of the building and peak through the window. The curtain are slightly closed, giving me a perfect hiding place.

"Sit." Ms. Sheafer points to two chairs in the main room. May sits down in one, and Tony in the other. I see her pull down a little white sheet from the ceiling and hook up a projector.

"Let's start with Tony." She begins by showing a picture of a baby left in a white blanket on the very porch I am standing on.

"Your parents are dead. That's why you're here. Well, your moms dead. Your dad is some good for nothing drunk who doesn't care enough to come get his son out of here." This is terrible.

"Oh look, your second birthday. You're still alone. Third? Little May is here to give you a friend. You two have always been loners and I'm tired of it. Six years later? Stupid, little, fat Gus is in the picture."

"Shut up." May mutters. Her fists are clenched and her face is red with anger at the mention of Gus.

"What did you say to me?" Ms. Sheafer stops the slide show and stares at May. Poor May, all alone and frightened in there. At least she has Tony.

"I said shut the fuck up about my brother before I make you." Mays new found confidence scares me. Maybe I shouldn't have told her she would be out in a few days. What if we loose the case and she has to stay here?

SMACK

I look back through the sundown to see May on the ground clutching her bright red cheek.

"You stupid child. Don't speak to me that way! Might I remind you that you're here because your parents don't want you? There alive and well. Still together too. That's how they delivered Gus. They're just too cheap to want a worthless imbecile like yourself."

"SHUT UP!" May jumps from her chair and faces Ms. Sheafer by herself. I can't control myself this time. As soon as I see the hand raised and ready to slap, I crank the front door handle and barge in.

All eyes are on me. Every single one, even Mays.

"Shawn get out!" May shouts and jumps on Ms. Sheafers back, who I hadn't noticed approach me earlier.

Ms. Sheafer pulls May off her back and throws her clear across the room. May lands on a table lamp and it shatters underneath her.

"May!" I shout and take a step inside. I feel hands push me back towards the door and I look to see Tony there.

"You should go before you get hurt Pretty Boy." He turns around a continues to throw punches at Ms. Sheafer and a few other men I don't recognize.

Next thing I know, May is at my side pulling me out the door.
