After you and Makarov broke up everything was different. He found himself lost in his thoughts constantly thinking of you. He could never focus on work anymore. He thought breaking up with you would benefit him for his work. Instead, it caused more damage. The breakup wasn't messy it was a nice clean and calm one.
"I can never put my plans aside for you," he said one day after you asked why he never had time for you. For months he would put you aside for everything. You tried your best to understand but your patience was running low.
"I understand" you replied calmly accepting that his work was more important.
And that was it: no arguments but a mutual understanding. You two decided it would be best to go your separate ways.
Up until now, Makarov struggled more than ever. His work was getting sloppy and messy. So much for leaving you to benefit from his work.
He would sit staring at his desk for hours not getting any work done. He started smoking more. He found himself smoking twice as much as he did before. Of course, he would let no one know about his feelings. He can't let his soldiers know that a very feared man is losing himself over an ex. But most importantly he would never let you know. He'd rather die than let you know he was doing worse without you. Even if the opportunity did happen he would never get back with you. But he would probably sleep with a lot of women to cope with you being gone.
