Vegas' POV

I feel like I've been sleeping for a very long time. I feel like I need to wake up, but why? Right now, I'm both tired and exhausted. Moreover, it feels like there's something wrong with my entire body.

As I lie still, my brain is slowly processing. My eyes remain closed, but I can hear sounds around me. I hear a rhythmic beeping of some device, and aside from that, just the faint sound of people talking. That's all I can perceive from my surroundings.

Returning to myself, I realize I'm not breathing on my own. Something is pushing air into me at a steady rhythm. When I try to resist this force, I feel a counterforce and a pain in my side.

Hospital?

What happened...

It took me a while longer to fully wake up and open my eyes. The first thing I saw was the equipment connected to my mouth and my dry lips. Then, there was a throbbing pain near my left shoulder and side.

I tried to speak, but the air coming out disrupted the rhythm of the machine, causing me to cough instead. This increased the pain and triggered an alarm on the device next to me.

"Bed two is awake," I heard someone say softly before they approached me.

"Mr. Kornwisit, can you hear me?" I tried to respond but the pain was too much, so I nodded instead.

"You're in the ICU. You just had surgery. Can you squeeze your hand, open your hand, and show two fingers?" I did as instructed.

Then they shone a light briefly into my eyes and asked me to lift both legs. I complied with everything before looking down at my empty left hand.

I was shot. What about Pete?

I glanced at the nurse's station and saw them talking, some writing notes, others on the phone. I couldn't hear what they were saying or who they were talking to.

After a while, the people I wanted to see the most arrived. Both Pete and Macau walked in, their smiles growing wider as they got closer to my bed. I wanted to smile and speak, but the tube in my mouth stopped me.

"The patient just woke up. All vital signs are normal. The attending physician has been informed. If the patient's condition continues to improve and he can breathe on his own, we will remove the breathing tube, and he might be moved out of the ICU tomorrow," the nurse said, looking between me and Pete. I only looked at him, noticing how tired he seemed.

"Thank you very much."

"Bro..." Macau gripped my hand tightly. This was the first time I had been so ill that I needed to be in the ICU. I squeezed his hand back, wanting to comfort him, but couldn't speak. Pete stood by, looking at me through teary eyes.

I wanted to apologize for making them worry.

Pete then walked around to my left side and slipped my wedding ring, which had been removed at some point, back onto my finger. He held my left hand, and now I was holding hands with the person I love with both hands.
