"Anne, what's gotten into you?" Diana's voice was filled with concern as she crouched down in front of Anne. Anne had both her legs tucked close to her chest, her head buried between her knees. Diana had hurried after Anne when she left the classroom, only to find her curled up behind the building.

"Ruby said I tried to attract Gilbert... You should've seen her face, Diana! She was devastated. I never befriended her to take Gilbert away, I swear! Believe me, Diana, please!" Anne's words came out hurriedly, punctuated by tears streaming from her winter-blue eyes.

Diana enveloped Anne in a tight hug before gently pushing her back to speak face-to-face. "Oh Anne, I believe you, even if Ruby doesn't. You know your intentions better than anyone. You wouldn't do that to Ruby."

Helping Anne stand, Diana continued, "Now, ignore them and at least give Gilbert an explanation. He was bewildered when you left like that."

Anne shook her head almost aggressively. "No! I can't. Ruby would be vexed if she saw me talking to him again."

Sighing, Diana led her frightened best friend back into the room before Mr. Philip arrived.

As they entered the classroom, several stares greeted them, especially from Ruby and the other girls. Gilbert followed their gaze and saw Anne and Diana entering through the front door. He shifted his focus to Anne's face, noting the redness around her eyes and her trembling body.

He started to rise to approach them, but Diana quickly shook her head and whispered, "I'll explain later," to him. Gilbert nodded in understanding and sat back down just as Mr. Philip arrived.

After class ended, Anne was the first to leave, her head bowed, staring at the ground. Before Diana could call out to her, she had already slipped out the door ahead of everyone else. Diana sighed, watching her best friend avoid her problems once again. She waited for the other girls to clear out of the classroom before approaching Gilbert.

"Did I do something?" Gilbert asked, his eyebrow raised in confusion.

Diana sighed deeply. "Ruby got upset with Anne because she thought Anne was trying to steal you away from her. I've known Ruby for so long, and it pains me to spill one of her biggest secrets, but she's had feelings for you for three years now and she's always been so possessive about who gets near you. By staying here and talking to you now, I'm already risking our friendship. I honestly don't know how she got the idea that Anne has eyes for you. I can't remember you two even chatting in class yesterday beyond your usual 'good mornings.'"

Gilbert frowned, his forehead furrowing as he thought back to the previous day. He remembered walking with Anne until she reached home safely, but he hadn't noticed anyone else nearby.

"Since you left early yesterday, I walked with Anne and ended up walking her to Green Gables too. Maybe Ruby was around, but I wasn't really paying attention, so I didn't notice." Gilbert sighed, pushing his hair back in frustration.
