𝐀: Well first off I want to say congrats for your win! That's so cool!

𝐌: Thank you! I honestly didn't expect to win 😅

𝐀: What were you expecting then when you joined? Was it for just to have fun or were you looking for some other achievement?

𝐌: Honestly, I just joined for the sake of joining. I like joining contests just to see how my book does, and for the honest reviews - I like reading about how and where I can improve in terms of my writing.

𝐀: That's an amazing thing to do, actually. It's always good to search for room of improvement. What were your thoughts when you did win?

𝐌: I was just surprised. There was literally running through my brain when I got the e-mail saying I had won. Granted, I had just opened my phone after waking up, so my brain was a bit foggy lol.

𝐀: I'm assuming that was a great morning for you, then?

𝐌: Yeah, it was. It really sunk in that my writing was slowly improving, given that the book was published in 2020 and was just edited in 2024.

𝐀: How'd you say your writing had improved/changed during these four years?

𝐌: I found that the way I write scenes have become better, especially when giving information and creating seamless transition to lessen confusion. I also expounded on scenes more, while also making everything simpler to understand.
In other words, I changed the way I viewed my work. In the past, I viewed my work through my lens, and the way I wrote reflected that. But now I view it through the lens of the readers.

𝐀: I'd say that's a great way to work, as an author myself. What would your tips be for beginning writers or people who are struggling to write a prologue?

𝐌: One thing I learned is that prologues are not a necessity in a book. I say this because some beginner writers tend to mistake a prologue for the first chapter, and might neglect the importance of the latter after already focusing on the former.
A prologue by definition is a supplemental piece that is meant to give background and context into the world we are about to enter.
So my number one tip, based on both the definition above and my experience, is to first know whether or not a prologue is necessary. As well as to understand why you are writing a prologue. Ask yourself, does my book need prior information for readers to understand the context and nuance of the story? In my case, I wrote my prologue to introduce us to Jessie Raegan's death; how and where she was found.
Tip #2. Don't overload or overcomplicate your prologue. Overcomplocating things tend to turn readers off from reading your work. It also leads to information overload. Instead, be simple and straightforward in your information. Feel free to be as descriptive in your scenes, but be aware of the amount of information you are giving.
Tip #3. Is your prologue set in the past, present, or future of your story? If yes, then make sure to use the appropriate tense.
Tip #4. Don't force yourself to write a prologue if you feel your book does not need it. Like I said, prologues aren't a necessity. You don't need to write one just because your idol or friend has written one in their story. If you deem it unnecessary, then it is.
Finally, remember to have fun when writing your prologue. You don't always have to get everything perfect in one go. That is what beta-reading and editing is for. Instead, write because it's fun. Write to improve. And write because you want to.

𝐀: Wow, that's great!!! Now lastly, as you have now experience from part-taking in our competition, what would you say could be improved? Did you find something that bothered you or could something work better in a different way?

𝐌: I think what could be improved is the number of participants allowed to join. While I understand why therr were only up to 5 participants allowed to join, it would honestly be nice to have more people join. Other than that, I have nothing more to say except that I really enjoyed the contest, and I'm really glad I was able to join. It was a fun experience.

𝐀: Thank you so much for the interview and again, congrats for your win!

𝐌: Thank you as well! 😊
