Evelyn

"Why is he mad at you?" Carry asks me again after taking a sip of wine.

It's been a few days since I'd helped Jared and Mark and Dad is still a little upset that I didn't even let someone know I was going off to a stranger's house for a medical emergency. He told me he couldn't be mad that I did it, but wished I'd been a little smarter about it. And I had to concede his point. And I was right that he'd tell my brother's, so now big brother one and two are both a little miffed at me for putting myself in danger. Trav even called me as soon as I was done on the phone with Dad and scolded me like I was one of the triplets.

Sylvie and Val both sigh, Val taking a huge gulp of wine, almost half the glass in one go. They've both been letting me whine about how everyone's mad at me now and all I wanted was to help someone. I'm sure my brothers have been venting to them too so they're tired of everyone talking about it.

"I went to a stranger's house to help someone who was really sick and didn't tell anyone where I was going. I had my pepper spray and I've been lectured three different times about why what I did was so stupid, but they're still mad at me," I whine, uncorking a fresh bottle and refilling my glass.

"Why didn't these people just go to a hospital or something? Why'd you have to go to their house?" Carry asks.

I sit back down onto the cream sofa in Carry's living room and place the new bottle onto the coffee table. "Because the guy that needed help was going through bond withdrawal. His fever was a hundred and six degrees when I got there. He would've died if I hadn't been there. All because he went and got himself bonded to a human."

"Wait, why is that bad?" Carry asks.

Sometimes I forget that she doesn't know everything about werewolves yet. She was scared to ask anything for weeks after she found out. We didn't have a girls night for almost three months before we finally started getting back to them. By then Val was finally okay leaving her babies, only Sylvie was pregnant then so she had to be the sobber one. With the triplets almost two and Emme almost one, we can finally all get drunk together.

"Human's can't carry a baby with werewolf genes," Val explains, finally letting me sit and just sip my wine. "The body sees it as a foreign invader and attacks it, causing miscarriage. Because most of us are so hardwired to have babies, it can cause problems when our chosen partner can't carry to term. That and you saw how quickly our relationships progress. I moved in with Trav and was pregnant after a week."

Carry sits quietly for a second before nodding her head and finishing off her glass. "Okay, I get it. That would freak me the hell out."

Just as Carry grabs the bottle off the coffee table, someone's phone starts ringing. Sylvie and Val both look at theirs, Val putting hers away with a sigh of relief. Every girls night either Trav or Trev calls because they can't stand being away for even a few hours, let alone an entire night. Sometimes they both do. I hate to admit it, but for the past couple of years there's been this little twinge of jealousy in my gut. I wish someone would call and bug me because they can't stand the idea of even a single night away from me.

            "Hi, honey. How's Emme?"

Even though I'm on the other side of the room from Sylvie, I can still hear my brother respond. "She's fine. After almost flooding the bathroom during bathtime and ripping a page out of one of her books and crying about it, she went to bed like a champ. What time are you coming home in the morning?"
