Evelyn
It's been over an hour and I'm still so embarrassed I could cry. How didn't I notice he was blind? I mean, all his lights are off and he almost never actually looks at my face when I speak.
When Ray opened his front door, the first thing that popped into my head was, wow, he's really handsome. His dark, almost black hair is messy, shaved shorter on the sides and back, but flopping over his forehead in the front. Stubble shadows his tan jaw and cheeks, making him look a little rough, like a cowboy or a mountain man. His eyes are so dark you can barely make out his pupils and they are so deep it's like they suck you in. He wore a grey shirt that was pulled tight over his broad shoulders and black gym shorts that hung loosely around his hips. He was also tall, like, really tall.
All in all he was a very good looking man.
The second thing that popped into my head was that I was standing naked in the cold in front of said good looking man. My whole life, whenever I'm nervous, I lose all control over my mouth. Once it starts I just can't make it stop. It was all made worse by where his eyes decided to settle. Now, I know he wasn't actually staring, but with his eyes staring straight at my exposed cleavage, the nervous babbling just got worse and worse. It's a horrible thing to think, but when I found out he was blind all I could think was at least he didn't mention me being naked because he found me repulsive or something.
I talked his ears off for a solid hour before I remembered my phone and needing to call my family before they started to worry about me being dead or something. I shot to my feet, startling Ray slightly because of the sudden movement. Honestly, I kinda forgot he was blind there for a second because he's just been sitting there listening quietly. I hope I haven't been boring him to death.
"Sorry, I just remembered I haven't called my parents. They probably think I'm dead by now," I tell him before hurrying into his kitchen. I flip the light switch when I enter and turn on my phone. There's a solid thirty missed calls from my dad and about fifteen each from my brothers. I hit call on Dad's contact and listen to the ring tone while walking back to the living room. It only rings once before he answers.
"Evelyn Sandra Scott, where the hell are you and why haven't you been answering the phone?"
"I'm sorry. My car got stuck in the snow and my phone died and I had to shift and walk to someone's house to charge it. I know it was stupid of me to drive in this and I should've just turned around when I couldn't find the road, but Joyce is a patient I've been helping from the beginning of her pregnancy, and I didn't want to miss the birth," I say, sitting back beside Ray. He just sits and listens, his dark eyes staring blankly just to the front of me. "But I'm okay, I promise. As soon as the snow stops, I'll find a way back to town or to the house."
"Evie," Dad says with a sigh, "it's supposed to snow all weekend."
"Well that's craptastic. What am I supposed to do?" If it keeps this up, how am I will I get home or even back to my car? It'll probably be buried in a few hours. I don't even have my coat, it's sitting on the passenger seat of my car.
"Where are you?"
"Um, at a man's house. His name is Ray."
Oh God, Evie, Dad's gonna be so mad. Why are you so stupidly trusting?
"Ray who?" Dad asks, sounding like his teeth are clenched.
I look over at Ray, who bites his lip like he doesn't want to say anything. I know he heard and has probably been listening since the phone call started. With a sigh, he finally answers, "Dupont."
