I woke up to the sound of my brothers Star Wars alarm in the room next to me.

I heard a thump which meant he probably fell out of bed.

A muffled "Goddamnit!" came from his room.

I rolled out of my blankets and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes.

I hopped up on my feet and slowly opened the curtains, letting light filter into my room.

I picked out my clothes and waited for Dustin to get out of the bathroom.

After I heard a flush and his bedroom door sliding closed, I slid my door open and trudged my way into the bathroom.

My mom loved cat decor. She had a cat shaped soap dispenser, a cat rug and cat print shower curtains all in one bathroom.

I got to work taming my curly hair, getting dressed and putting on some makeup.

After I checked myself over in the mirror. I felt more awake and like myself.

I went back into my room and grabbed my purse.

In the kitchen I could hear my mom and Dustin talking and I smelled some toast, then heard the pop of the toaster.

I walked out and my mom smiled at me.

"Good morning honey," She patted a chair next to her at the kitchen table.

"Morning mama," I kissed her on the top of her head and then sat down.

She had made toast and jam with a warm cup of tea for Dustin and I.

"So, mom, as I was saying, I think we should totally invest some of my allowance money into getting a second turtle, or, and just think about it, we could get a snake," Dustin said, smiling and persuading,

My mom cringed next to me. "Oh Dusty. You already know how I feel about your one turtle. And besides, snakes can swallow animals whole. Do you really want Mews to be eaten whole by some scaly thing?"

She picked up Mews and clung to him, petting his head and purring at him.

Dustin looked at me, I only shrugged.

"I'm fine with another cat," I said, taking another bite of my toast and sipping on my tea.

Dustin looked at the clock and his eyes widened. "Shit."

"Dusty, watch your language!" My mom said in a shrill voice.

"Sorry mom," He shoved the remaining piece of bread in his mouth and the chugged the tea. "I promised everyone we would meet up at the arcade. I need to start looking for quarters."

I looked at the clock on the wall. "You do realize it's the weekend and it's only nine in the morning?"

"Okay but consider this, the sooner I look, the more money I'll probably have." Dustin grinned at me.

I rolled my eyes. "Whatever you do, do not steal any money from me or I will ruin your perfect teeth."

His smile fell.

"Diana Louise! Do not try to hurt your brother!" My mom scolded me this time.

I held up my hands in surrender. "All I'm saying is that Nancy tells me Mike steals her money and I don't need you to go dipping into my savings just to play Dig Dug."

"Don't worry. I don't need your fifteen dollars in pennys," Dustin smirked.

"Whatever," I turned back to my mom. "What are your plans for today mama?"

"Well, I do want to finish up raking in the backyard. Then I was thinking we can make a batch of pumpkin spice cookies," She smiled.

"I'll help you mama. I just have to remember Jonathan is picking me up at two for the pumpkin patch."

We continued to eat in silence, hearing the occasional swear or thud from Dustin flipping around his room for money.

Around eleven thirty, my mom and I had finished taking and we were watching TV, waiting for the cookies to move done in the oven when Dustin came in looking frantic and told us to stand up from the couch.

"I need to look for couch change."

"Really Dusty?" Mom asked.

"Yes really, last time I only had three quarters. I need at least a couple more," Dustin held out his hand to show two coins.

My mom and I stood up and watched Dustin flip the cushions.

The timer went off so I went into the kitchen and took the tray out.

I loaded another batch of cookie dough on the tray and popped it in the oven, then reset the timer.

Dustin ran out the door shouting goodbyes before hopping on his bike and pedaling down the driveway and down the street.

"He's going to be a menace when he starts driving," I mumbled, fixing the couch cushions.

Mom nodded in agreement and we went back to watching one of her daytime soap operas.

Jonathan kept his promise because at exactly two o'clock, he showed up at my front door.

I let him in and he said hello to my mother. She immediately handed him a container of her pumpkin spice cookies while I grabbed my purse.

"I'll have her back before it gets too dark Mrs. Henderson," Jonathan smiled at my mom.

"Of course. You kids have fun now," my mom stood at the door as Jonathan and I got into his car.

Jon backed out of the driveway and we headed down the street.

"How's your day been so far?" I asked him.

"Well, you know my mom. She's still as antsy as ever when it comes to Will. She had a small freak out today because Will was in the bathroom and she couldn't find him."

"Hey, it's better to have her worried while he's here than to have her fall apart again if something ever happened to him," I replied.

He nodded, "I'm just worried about them. How can I not be, you know?"

"Look, J, let's just take today to relax and enjoy these cookies."

Jonathan smiled. "Whatever you say Di."

I turned on the radio and a Queen song came on.

We hummed along and sang the parts we knew.

When I was with Jonathan, I felt safer than at home, safer than being in my bedroom.

Maybe it was because we went through so much together. Or maybe it was because we shared things with each other that no one else knew.
