Jon was humming along to a song and finally began carving so I took that as an opportunity to clean the seeds and start roasting them.

It took me a few minutes and by the time I popped the tray in the oven, Jonathan was still halfway there.

"Need help?" I asked him, setting a timer.

He sighed. "I'm fine. Just thinking about them again."

I nodded. "Tomorrow at school, if it makes you feel better, we can have lunch in your car. Just so we don't have to see them."

Jonathan chuckled.

"Don't laugh at me Jonathan Byers. Whenever we eat in the cafeteria, you always stare at Nancy. It's borderline creepy, you know?"

"Oh, so when I stare at Nancy it's weird. But when you watch Steve walk in his skin tight jeans, it's okay?" Jonathan smirked at me.

My face began to burn from embarrassment.

He was right, to an extent. But could you really blame me?

Steve could hit me with his nail bat and I'd thank him and apologize for being in his way.

I turned away from Jonathan and immediately began stress crunching on some cookies.

The pumpkin spice was soothing, but not that flavored enough to take out that nonexistent bitter taste in my mouth.

"Do you ever wonder what life would be like for us if you told Nancy how you felt and I told Steve?"

I could hear Jon stop working behind me. He sighed and then, "I think about those few weeks all the time."

It went quiet for a few minutes. Both of us stopped moving, and I felt very much relieved.

"God, we are such losers Jonathan."

"We're freaks too. Crazy, traumatized freaks."

I started laughing, and then felt a splat on my back.

I turned to find Jonathan with a big smile on his face and a hand covered in pumpkin slime.

"Did you just throw that at me?" I asked him.

I already knew the answer as I twisted my arm behind my back and pulled a chunk of slimy pumpkin off my back.

"You're so going down," I smirked.

Jon's smirk dropped slightly but he took a few steps back into the living room.

I lunged towards the table and grabbed handfuls of slime.

"This getting your mind off things now?" Jon asked.

"The only thing I'm worried about now is getting you back," I laughed.

We danced around the coffee table in the living room until a car pulled up outside and Jonathan turned to look out the window. I took this as an opportunity to smudge the goo all on his shirt and in his hair.

"Diana!" Jonathan said shocked.

I started laughing maniacally but then felt the goo hit my neck and close down my shirt.

"Oh gross!" I replied, still laughing.

"I see you kids are having fun," Joyce said, walking into the house, followed by Will.

"Sorry about the mess Joyce," I apologized. "Someone's hand slipped." I turned to glare at Jonathan as we headed back into the kitchen.

"Is that a ghost busters pumpkin?" Will asked, with a huge smile on his face.

"Yeah. I was trying to surprise you but Diana clearly didn't want me to succeed," Jonathan told him.

"What are you making in the oven?" Joyce asked.

"Oh I hope you don't mind. I was roasting pumpkin seeds while Jon took his absolute sweet time," I replied.

The time beeped as if on cue and I got the tray out of the oven.

The house immediately smelled like warm, autumn goodness.

Jonathan worked to finish his pumpkin carving and I went to the bathroom to get the pumpkin goo off of me.

As I was walking out the bathroom I got jumpscared by Will.

"Do you like my brother?" He asked me.

"First of all, don't scare me, I will drop kick you. Second of all, he's my best friend, and I'm older than him. Third of all, I'm a hopeless romantic that is basically a lost cause."

Will sighed. "If Jonathan doesn't get a girlfriend soon, I'm going set him up with Arcade Keith's sister."

I laughed. "I'm sure he'll be thrilled bud."

I went back into the kitchen and Jonathan was cleaning the table, finally finished.

"Ready to go home?" He asked me.

"Yep, I just have to grab the cookie container and my pumpkin and purse."

Joyce handed me an empty container. "Will ate the last four cookies. Sorry."

"Oh that's alright, my mom has more at home." Joyce's eyes lit up. "I'll have Jonathan bring some home for you tomorrow after school."

"Okay honey. Wait, let me get a picture of you two with your pumpkins," Joyce said, grabbing her camera.

I grinned and pulled Jonathan next to me. We held our pumpkins up and Joyce snapped two pictures of us.

"Oh you two are too cute! Get hope safe Diana. Good night!"

I waved with my only free hand and got in Jonathan's car.

This day felt like it lasted forever.

The radio played softly as Jon drove me home.

When we pulled into the driveway, I sighed.

"Whelp, I guess I'll see you tomorrow. 7:30 am. With cookies."

"And also a reminder that we have a photography class quiz tomorrow."

"Studied and prepared already."

"Well, see you tomorrow," Jonathan waved me goodbye as I walked up to the front door.

I left the pumpkin outside by the bushes, making a mental reminder to put a candle inside tomorrow.
