I didn't realize we were parked in front of Melvald's already. I unbuckled myself, grabbed the cookies and got out of the car.
Jonathan followed me and I saw Bob Newby leaving the store.
I said hello to him and walked inside.
Jonathan didn't particularly like Bob, he said he was too nice but if he made Joyce happy then he was okay with it.
"Good morning Pricess Diana," Joyce greeted from behind the register.
I playfully rolled my eyes at the nickname. "Good morning Joyce. I brought you some cookies."
Jonathan walked in with a forced smile on his face.
"I thought you guys were going to get some pumpkins," Joyce said, with a cookie in hand.
"This disease came and wiped out the entire patch," Jonathan began to explain.
I went down one of the aisles and found the crafting supplies. I grabbed a pack of crochet hooks, some yarn and then I decided to look at the Halloween decorations.
They had a little pumpkin banner that would replace the watermelon banner that still hung outside our house from the Fourth of July.
I grabbed that and went to the front to boy everything.
Joyce was eating another cookie when I got to the front.
"Your mothers cookies are heaven on earth, Diana," Joyce smiled, wiping her hands before beginning to check out my items.
"Well, hopefully she'll make more before Halloween. Almost the whole batch is gone."
I paid and took my stuff, not neatly packed in a brown paper bag.
"We're headed to the farmers market. I'm getting winter squash for casserole."
Jonathan and I headed out, saying our goodbyes and walking out back into the crisp autumn air.
I put my purchases in Jonathan's car and we walked down the street to the farmers market in the square.
It only came around for two or three weeks before Halloween, depending on the weather.
Since today was the weekend, it was crowded by town hall. Little booths of farmers with their produce or home gardeners with a surplus of veggies were talking and smiling and selling goods.
There was a booth selling homespun wool and I just knew I had to have some.
Jonathan went to get some squash and I went to grab two pumpkins, and the wool of course.
We both met back up after a few minutes and started chatting about how we were going to tackle our pumpkins carving.
Jon wanted to do a carving of the ghostbusters logo for Will but I decided to stay traditional and do a jack-o'-lantern face.
We walked back to the car and then began the ride to the Byers house.
When we got there, no one else was at the house. It was quiet, a peaceful quiet.
We took our purchases into the house and I made sure to grab the remaining cookies.
I set up newspaper on the kitchen table so we wouldn't have to clean up too big of a mess.
Jonathan put on some music and I got straight to carving.
I finished mine way before Jonathan did. He was still working on carving out the inside and measuring for his ghostbusters design.
I decided to roast the pumpkin seeds from mine and Jonathan's pumpkins.
