The stale air of Namjoon's apartment hung heavy with the lingering scent of cigarettes and regret. He ran a hand through his hair, the rough texture a stark contrast to the smooth surface of the mahogany desk he leaned on.
He'd spent months infiltrating the notorious Black Rabbits, painstakingly weaving himself into their trust, slowly earning a place in their inner circle. His mission: gather intel, gather evidence, bring down the organization. And he'd been so close – until their masked boss had handed him the assignment, the one that threatened to unravel everything he'd built. He was to eliminate a businessman, who had refused to pay protection money.
His phone vibrated against the desk, the familiar ringtone a stark reminder of the weight of his decision. He'd just gotten confirmation from his superior: Jungkook was to be brought in, no matter the cost.
'Captain,' he croaked, his voice rough with the weight of his emotions. 'I need your confirmation. I have to share the plan today. Jeon has been hinted about it. We can work a way to drag everyone down at once before the deadline of the assassination.'
A tense silence stretched across the line before his superior spoke, his voice a hushed whisper. 'This is a risky gambit, Officer Kim. But if you believe you can lure them all together on your own.. We're in your hands.'
'It is,' Namjoon interrupted, his voice hardening with newfound resolve. 'I can get Jeon to turn state's evidence. He's afraid, Captain, he wants out. That, I can assure you.'
'You know the risks too well. Also keep in mind he's not your responsibility. You are.'
Namjoon could hear the concern in his superior's voice, the echoes of the doubt that gnawed at his own conscience. 'I'm willing to take that risk, Captain. I have to. For us, and for the victims,' he said, the words feeling like a promise, a vow to himself.
The conversation continued, filled with careful considerations and calculated instructions on the team they'll send to cooperate.
Namjoon outlined his plan. He'd use Jungkook's trust in him to manipulate the situation, to get him to testify against the Black Rabbits, to dismantle it from the inside out. It was a dangerous game, a high-stakes gamble that could either break him or save them both.
The line went quiet again. Namjoon held his breath, his heart thumping against his ribs. 'We'll need to go through the proper channels,' his superior finally replied, his voice measured. 'But I trust your judgement, Kim. We're getting the authorisation.'
The Captain's voice came through the phone after minutes of typing sounds and consultations. 'Officer Kim, permission accorded for the task. You'll be having the support of the whole team, make sure that rascal knows his role, or he'll be the first we take out.' He warned him strictly. 'Also, just be careful till then.'
