Revika Shastri

It was early morning and I heard some rustling in the room. I slowly opened my eyes to see Ro there, he was unpacking some kind of food. I also saw a suitcase packed and ready next to the door, it wasn’t mine though. I got up slowly and Ro looked back at me with a smile, “Uth gayi Ranisa, good morning,” he said playfully. I chuckled and rubbed my eyes, I was still sleepy and with a yawn I said, “Morning, Itni bhi kya jaldi thi aane ki? khud sota mujhe bhi sone deta.”

He sighed, “Actually Re, woh Niharika ka call aya tha, woh kuch issues hogaye hai kaam ko leke aur uss se akele handle nahi ho raha hai, she doesn’t know about your condition yet so usne mujhe Delhi bulaya hai,” he said. I shook my head at his sad face. Niharika was his girlfriend and one of the badass women I have met, they ran a security company but it specialized in online security, they did have an offline security sector though, it wasn’t major. They make apps and systems that are impossible to hack into. Niharika was the hacker brain behind all this, while Ro was the business mind.

Their pairing was like hand in glove. Perfect. “Aree, toh fir jaa na mein sirf behosh hui hu, I’m not dying. Your company needs you.” I said with a smile and he smiled in return. “Ghar ki chaabi is in your purse, I will be back as soon as I can, I have texted you the pin to the house and also, a few other devices that you may or may not trigger, so make sure you read the list okay. Take care, I’m late for my flight, nashta karle, I will see you soon.” He said and gave me a side hug, he soon set the food and left. I was bored after breakfast and decided to take a nap.

I laid down on the bed, I shut my eyes. A few minutes went by and I felt like I was almost close to sleeping, but then I heard the door open. My brows furrowed and I assumed it might be a nurse or the doctor, I opened my eyes and saw Aakash in front of me. “You bitch! You caused this, you are the reason I don’t have anything anymore, I am going to kill you today!!” he said, by the time I realized what was going on he was already compressing my neck. I felt harder and harder to breathe, I could feel my face turn red.

I started to see black, I tried to kick him, I tried to push him away but he was stronger and I got caught off guard, I was almost about to lose consciousness but all of a sudden, his hands were no longer on me and I could hear commotion in the room. I fainted regardless.

Revika woke up an hour later. It was 9 a.m., she saw cops standing in her room, a few nurses and her doctor. They noticed that she was now awake. The cops rushed to her side and one of them said, “Ms. Revika, I am the head officer in your case, can you walk us through what happened this morning when Dr. Pradhan walked in?”

Revika was now seated on the bed, she nodded and began, “I had my breakfast and thought to nap until it was time for my check up, I almost dozed off, but then I heard the door opening, I opened my eyes to see Aakash right above me and he started yelling and cussing about how it was all my fault that he was now on the streets. He then tried to strangle me and all of a sudden, he was pushed off of me and then I fainted. That’s all that happened.” She finished and the cop nodded. He finished taking notes and said that he had all he needed for now.

“Mr. Sehgal is currently in custody; we are going to have a cop outside of your room at all times. You don’t have to worry about your safety Ms. Shastri.” He said and they left the room.

I got ready for work early. When I woke up Maa told me that she wanted her and I to go to meet Revika. She said it wouldn’t be appropriate for the entire family to go at once, and that we should all go in turns, it would be awkward if the entire family showed up. I agreed, it would be too intense.
She woke up early to make her a nice lunch. We left soon after to see her.

It took us about 30 minutes to arrive at the hospital Reva was admitted in. We took the elevator up to her room and all the while Maa kept mentioning how excited she was to meet Reva and how much she had missed her. It was hard to believe all the stories about the kind of conversations she has had with my mother, she seems like the most gentle and caring person, whereas with me she’s a feisty woman.

We walked towards her room after getting off the elevator only to see that the hallway was crowded and cops were coming out of Reva’s room. Instant panic rushed through me, was she okay? I rushed towards her room, completely forgetting that Maa was with me, I was stopped by the doctor on my way in, “She is under police protection, you will have to wait for permission before you can go in, sir,” he said to me. Although he was doing his duty, I was too concerned to give flying fucks.

The head cop saw me and recognized me, I have met him for a few cases of my own. He walked towards me and shook my hand, I gave him a curt nod, asked him to wait and headed in the room. “Are you okay? What happened?” the words left my mouth as soon as my eyes fell on her form that sat on the bed, she widened her eyes at the sound of my voice. Obviously, I am the last person she would expect. There were bags under her eyes and folds on her forehead, she was disturbed.

I couldn’t stop myself from walking towards her and holding her by the shoulders. I checked for injuries and asked her, “What the actual fuck happened?” I just heard a sigh and out of nowhere her hands wrapped around my torso and I felt her silently sobbing, “I could have died today” she whispered silently. I felt rage crawl into my veins, but my concern for her was much greater than that rage and I chose to put off finding the bastard that caused her pain.

“Who did this to you, Reva?” I asked her, my voice filled with rage, but she didn’t say anything. She continued to sob and I caressed her hair, mid – crying I saw Maa walk in and witness the scene, her eyes laced with concern and empathy, it was a look of shared pain, the one she gave me when I was sick. Motherly pain of seeing your child in distress. She sat down on the couch in the room and waited till Reva let it out.

Once she was all calmed down, Reva straightened herself and cleared her throat. She was yet to notice Maa. “I’m sorry, I was overwhelmed with emotion,” she said in a monotone voice. I sighed. Why does she always think I have an issue with her proximity, all I want is to hold her closer. I shook my head and signed mom to come to her. She would be more comfortable talking openly with Maa. I walked out the room and decided to get all the info on what went down in that room.

meri taraf aata har gham fisal jaye,      aankhon me tumko bharoon…”
