Summer had officially ended, and the mornings grew colder as the leaves transformed from their dark greens and browns to vibrant reds and yellows. The crisp chill in the air signified the beginning of the harvest season for many citizens of Galador, but for new recruits like Emile, it meant dark hikes before dawn. Each recruit was now required to complete a five-mile hike every morning from the gates of the academy to the small lake located east of Ascalon.

Emile paused at the top of a small hill, taking in the breathtaking view. The lake below formed a serene divide between the lush forest and the endless rolling hills that dotted the landscape. The sun's rays peeked over the horizon, casting a beautiful reflection across the water. Emile stood there, breathless, soaking in the tranquility and beauty of the scene.

The hikes had begun shortly after Gareth and Emile's conversation about the Harvest Festival. At first, both believed they might collapse under the sheer weight of their packs. Each recruit was required to carry sixty pounds of gear, including food and water, with any remaining space filled with stones gathered from the river that ran parallel to Ascalon's fairgrounds. Now, two weeks later, they had grown accustomed to the weight and were amazed at how quickly their bodies had adapted to the hardship and stress.

The path to the lake was rugged and challenging, winding through dense forests and over steep hills. The scent of pine and earth filled the air, mingling with the crisp, cool breeze that rustled the leaves. The sounds of birds chirping and the occasional rustle of small animals added to the serene yet invigorating atmosphere.

Emile and the other recruits marched in unison, their boots crunching on the fallen leaves and gravel. The brotherhood among the recruits had grown stronger with each hike, their shared struggles forging bonds of friendship and mutual respect. The morning light filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground and creating a mesmerizing dance of light and dark.

As they reached the lake, the water's surface shimmered in the early morning sun, creating a mirror-like reflection of the sky and surrounding landscape. The peaceful scene was a stark contrast to the grueling effort required to get there, but it served as a reminder of the beauty and rewards that come with perseverance and dedication.

Emile took a deep breath, feeling a sense of accomplishment and determination. The hikes were more than just physical training; they were a testament to their resilience and growth. Each step, each mile, brought them closer to their goals and strengthened their resolve to push ahead of all obstacles.

With renewed energy, Emile and the recruits prepared to make their way back to the academy, ready to tackle the day's training with the same vigor and determination that had brought them to this point. The journey back was filled with laughter and conversation, the bonds of friendship and the shared experience making the miles seem shorter and the weight of their packs lighter.

The academy's towering gates came into view, a symbol of their commitment and the path they had chosen. As they crossed the threshold, the sounds of trotting hooves and high-pitched neighs from the main gates greeted them. Cresting the horizon, they saw a group of six horses lined up outside the gates, riderless, with Sir William mounted on his beautiful black steed.

He waved as they approached, prompting the students to salute. Sir William smiled and waved his hands dismissively. "Good morning, students. Sir Richard is on a mission this week, and I've been asked to teach you all the basics of riding a horse." His eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as he scanned the group, pausing briefly to give Emile a knowing nod.

"Now, I understand many of you know how to ride, but most of you have not had the opportunity to ride a trained steed like we have here," he continued, gesturing towards the line of horses.
