"When Daksh Prajapati insulted Sati and humiliated her husband, enraged and deeply hurt, she stepped into the burning Yagya Kund and ended her life.

Later, Mata Sati incarnated on Earth as Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan and Queen Maina, the lords of Himalaya Mountain range. Upon her birth, Sage Narad Muni arrived to shower the couple and newborn with blessings and predicted that Parvati was destined to marry Mahadeva. This elated the parents and while growing up, Parvati was often told about the declaration.

When the Princess of Himalaya attained the marriageable age, she left her Royal Palace in search of Mahadeva and reached Kailash, his rumored residence.

That time, Mahadeva was grieving the loss of his first wife, Devi Sati and was immersed into a deep meditation. He didn't answer Parvati's call. To appease him, Parvati decided to penance.

She only ate roots and leaves while bearing the harsh conditions of mountains. Her suffering was so great to win Mahadev's heart that she grew thin and frail, her complexion dimmed and her garments melted away. Still, she continued her rigour penance with only one aim in mind.

Mahadeva

Meanwhile, a demon Tarka was terrorizing both humans and gods. To find a solution, gods went to Brahma, who declared that only the son of Shiva and Parvati can defeat the asura. This led the gods to assist Parvati and to draw Shiva out of deep meditation, they sent Kama, the God of desire, to Kailash.

When Kama shot an arrow into Shiva to rouse desires for Parvati, this angered him, causing him to open his third eye and annihilate Kama into ashes.

On the other hand, Parvati continued her penance for 5000 years, and had stopped eating and drinking altogether, becoming skeletal in appearance. Her body struggled at the mercy of cold, wind, searing heat and rain, and yet she remained. The energy of her penance grew greatly and equaled to that of Mahayogi himself. Through her penance she remembered her past life as Sati. Her energy grew so strong that it reached Mahadeva, stirring him from his meditation.

Noticing Parvati, he realized that she was his lost wife.

Her condition roused emotions in him. Now she only drank air to survive.

Disguised as a sage, he approached her and asked the reason behind this Mahatapa. To which she replied, she intends to marry Shiva.

"Why would a princess such as you want to marry that mad man covered in ash and tiger skin?" he asked.

"Because we are incomplete without each other." She simply answered.

A tearful Shiva revealed himself to Parvati and the two reunited after centuries of separation."
