The door slammed behind Charles when he stormed into the house.

Katniss and Gale were sitting down; hands occupied with cups of water.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Charles yelled, causing the children to shudder.

Katniss stood quiet but Gale stood up, “Charles I was going to tell you.”

Charles shouted, “When? When I hear your name called!”

His words silenced the room.

Katniss began to tear and Gale was close to tears, “Charles I was trying to protect you, I can’t bear the thought of you being killed!”

Charles sighed and slumped down in the chair, head in his hands.

“I’m sorry.”

Charles looked up and embraced Gale softly, “It’s alright.”

Gale slowly cried on his brother’s shoulder, “I was scared you would be chosen.”

Charles sighed and whispered, “I would rather go then let any of you go, mutant or not.”

Katniss wiped her eyes and whispered, “Sit down; I have some berries to eat on.”

The brothers nodded and silently approached an unstable wooden table where the blueberries were in a wooden bowl.

It was quiet until Katniss mentioned, “After the Reaping, how about we trade the squirrels for some bread at the Mellark bakery?”

“You just want to see that Peeta boy,” Gale teased before Katniss smacked him on the shoulder with her hand.

“Quit it you too,” Charles said with a laugh, “You guys…” Charles was about to finish when a siren wailed.

It was time.

The room was silent.

Gale’s breathing changed rapidly, he looked he was going to have a heart attack.

Katniss squeezed his hand, “Breathe. It’ll be over before you know it.”

Charles stood up and said “Let’s go.”

The children nodded and stood up, heading towards the door.

Outside was crowded; all the mutants began walking towards the Reaping Stage. Charles held both his sibling’s hands, telepathically telling them: It’s alright.
