Help
Spencer Reid fidgeted at his desk, his mind far from the stack of paperwork before him. Today was the day they'd unravel another mysterious thread of Jason Gideon's life. Sleep had eluded him the night before as he pored over his mentor's farewell letter, searching for clues. Why had Gideon left such an important phone with him? What was its significance?
Penelope Garcia burst into the room, her excitement palpable. "Oh! Guys! I think she's here! This person just froze in the lobby - at first I thought it was an intern, but she's in sweatpants, so probably not, and-"
"She?" Reid interjected, curiosity piqued.
"Definitely a she. Tiny, sounds cute. Big sunglasses, though, couldn't really see her face, and-"
"Baby Girl, where is she now?" Morgan cut in, sensing Garcia's tendency to ramble.
"Right! I sent her to the conference room. She should be there now!" Penelope beamed, practically bouncing.
"I'll talk to her. Morgan, find Hotch," Reid said, standing up.
Taking a deep breath, he entered the conference room. A young woman sat there, anxiety radiating off her. She looked up as he entered.
"Uh--hi?" Reid cringed inwardly at his awkward greeting.
She removed her sunglasses and lowered her hood. "Hi. I'm, uh, looking for Jason Gideon. He knows I'm coming." Her smile was tentative but warm.
Reid felt himself tense. He closed the door and sat across from her. "Actually, he's not here."
Her eyes widened, body stiffening. "What? Wait, first, who are you? And second, where's Gideon?"
Before Reid could respond, Hotch and Morgan entered. "Hello, I'm Agent Aaron Hotchner. That's Agent Derek Morgan, and you've met Dr. Spencer Reid," Hotch introduced.
"Where's Jason Gideon? He told me to come here." She pulled out a burner phone, trying to call him. Panic edged into her voice.
When Reid's pocket vibrated loudly, her head snapped towards him. He produced an identical phone. "How the hell did you get that?"
"Gideon left the BAU about two years ago. He left some things with me, including this phone," Reid explained gently.
The woman ran a hand through her hair, standing abruptly. "You don't know where he is? Why did he give you that? I-" Her words tumbled out, confusion evident.
