It was 9 o'clock on the dot when I pulled up to the abandoned asylum. There was a tall chain link fence I'd have to climb if I planned on getting to the courtyard. That wasn't the problem though.
The problem was the rumors that made this place out to be haunted. I don't consider myself superstitious, but I believed some of them. Regardless - with Des's life on the line - I'd take the chance.
Parking on the street, I hopped out and climbed the fence as fast as possible. I didn't want to get locked up for trespassing. I walked through the dark, finding the courtyard with ease. It resembled an outdoor basketball court minus the goals, with a lone tree in the center that seemed depressed in the concrete oasis.
A shiver ran down my spine as a stray breeze blew through. I got the feeling someone was watching me. I turned around full circle, looking for the person I'm rendezvousing with, but find I'm alone. I turn to leave, but stop dead in my tracks when I come face to face with a man I've never seen before.
Tall with jet black hair and porcelain skin, he was a sight to behold. He radiated power and authority as if he was above everyone else.
"Your friend is safe as I told you once before, she is awaiting you in your car. However, you and I have a few things we must discuss before you are allowed to leave," he told me in a bone-chilling voice.
I stared into his icy baby blue eyes quivering slightly, realization that I may not be leaving this place alive settling into the pit of my stomach.
"I have spared your friend's life but want something from you in return," the strange man said smoothly.
I cocked an eyebrow at him, thinking he's outta his damn mind. A cloud covered the moon, extinguishing our only source of light. I used it as a chance to try and get away. I took off running for the fence, but in a flash he's in front of me, causing me skid to a stop.
There was no way humanly possible he could have gotten in front of me that quickly. I took a few steps back, nervously contemplating my options.
"Don't run, it will only make me end both of your lives," he threatened. "Now come child, and listen to my proposal. I want to offer you the chance to take the place of your friend as my assistant."
I stare at him, completely stunned. "Um come again? You want me to be your assistant, in Desiree's place? What type of business are you into, cause you don't exactly strike me as a stockbroker."
The sound that comes from low in his throat resembles that of a very pissed animal. Maybe I took my sarcasm a bit too far.
"Don't play games with me!" He was yellin now, but I was more focused on how his lips didn't move much when he spoke, and made sure that his teeth were covered at all times.
All the blood drained from my face. Either this man was a ventriloquist, or a vampire. I went for the more plausible option, "A-are y-you a v-v-vampire?"
He took a step back as his eyes widened in shock, the tables were turned now.
Quickly the stranger regained his composure and stared at me with faint interest in his cold eyes, "What would lead you to ask such a thing?"
I rolled eyes in false confidence. I may be young, but my mom didn't raise a fool.
"Really? Okay. Well, first off, your diction. You talk extremely proper, and have older mannerisms. Second, look at you! You're wearing slacks, a button down, a vest, and a leather trench coat. Don't get me wrong, that's a pretty dope outfit but it's summertime and hot as hell, yet you wearing a leather trench coat. You crazy. And lastly, you hide your teeth when you talk, as if they'd reveal the truth to what you are." Staring at him intently I concluded, "You're a vampire, just admit it."
