"Okay. Tell me exactly what happened, Lea." Detective Francis was a tall guy with white skin, dark hair and dark eyes. He was nice enough - he'd brought me something to eat since I'd waited so long.

Taking a deep breath, I relayed the events for what seemed to be the hundredth time, "We were on our way back to the main trail when she claimed to see something in the dark. I tried to stop her but she shook me off and went to go see what it was. I don't know what it was but something or perhaps someone grabbed her and disappeared into thin air. I know that seems crazy but it's what I saw." I looked him in the eyes, daring him to accuse me of lying.

He held my gaze as he spoke, "I believe you. Do you know anybody that would want to hurt Ms. Brown? Or where she could possibly be?"

I looked at the table, deep in thought, trying to remember anything that would help but I came up empty. "No," I told him, "Des had no enemies. And as for where she would go.... I don't know. She always liked this cliff that over looked the lake, that's the only place I can think of."

He nodded solemnly before standing and passing me a business card. "Here. If you can think of anything else, or you hear anything, give me a call. That's my personal number so feel free to call anytime, day or night. We're going to find her, don't worry. You're free to go. I recommend you should get some rest. I'll notify you if we find anything." After speaking to me, he walked out the door and closed it softly behind him.

I sit there, staring at my reflection in the two way glass, thoughts running amuck through my head. My best friend was now missing and it was all my fault. She only came because she wanted to make sure nothing happened to me while I was out searching, but instead she was the one who got hurt. There was no telling what was happening to her at that very moment while I sat there in that interrogation room, safe from all danger.

I should've been out there doing something to find her, but what? With no idea who took her or why - let alone where - I was just as useless as the cops were at the moment.

A yawn escaped me as I moved to stand up and for the first time since the incident, I realize just how tired I was. Taking my keys out of my pocket I forced myself to leave the police station.

I drove home in complete silence.

~

My mom wasn't home, which meant she was either at her second job or pulling a double. Figures that when I need my mom the most, she wasn't there. I was used to being alone by now, my mom was usually to busy to be bothered with me. That didn't make me hate her or anything, it was hard being a single parent. My dad walked out on us when I was four and never looked back once. It was me and my mom against the world, but at the moment I wished she was there to help me figure out what to do, because I was lost.

Sighing, I made my way to my room only to be bombarded with kisses from my dog. For the first time since the incident, my lips curve upward in a faint smile.

After managing to shake off Sam, I went into my room to peel off my sweaty clothes. I threw them into the hamper before crawling onto my bed. I laid there, atop my comforter, wearing a tank top and boxers. I was to drained to take a shower, or go under the comforter, and instead lay there, staring at my bedroom window.

When I closed my eyes, Desiree's smiling face materialized before me. A single tear slunk down out of the corner of my eye, making its way slowly to my pillow.

"I'm going to find you baby girl," I muttered quietly to myself, "I promise."

I laid there, in the dark imagining a possible future for me and her, until finally falling into an uneasy sleep.

~

I awoke to something scratching on my window. I became furious after a quick glance at the clock on my bedside table. It was 4 in the morning.

The scratching noise came again from my window again.my dog, who'd ended up curled up at the foot of my bed, growled ferociously at the window. What the hell was going on? I grab the pool stick I kept near my bed, and stood up, going to investigate.

Pulling the curtain open with haste, I didn't see anything, at first. An envelope was propped against the window frame, my name was written on the front in Des's handwriting. Throwing the window open I snatched the letter before it could've been blown away, and absently closed the window as a took a few steps back into my room, focused on nothing but the paper and ink I held in my hands.

I collapsed onto my bed, tearing the letter open. I removed the paper from the envelope (giving myself a paper cut in the process). My eyes ping-ponged across the page, trying to absorb it all at once.

"I have your friend Desiree. She is safe and unharmed. If you want to see her safe again, you will do as I say. Do not tell the authorities that you have received this message, as such a thing will not be wise. Meet me in the courtyard of the quarantined HAL institute at midnight. Come alone, and tell no one else of this meeting."

I dropped the paper, and held my head in my hands, trying not to cry. At least now I knew she was safe, but I wouldn't get the answers I wanted until midnight. In a daze I crawled under my covers and curled up into a ball, my heart playing tug a war with different emotions. With nothing to do until that night, I stared at the ceiling mentally preparing for whatever madness destiny had in store.

~

It had taken me forever to fall asleep but at some point exhaustion overcame all the worry and stress. When I finally woke, the whole day had passed, and it was already 6 in the evening.

Sitting up in my bed, I stretched, then checked my phone. Surprisingly, I had a few notifications. One standing out from the others. A message from Des told me that I was to come alone and that the time had been moved up.

I was to come to the courtyard after dark. No specific time was mentioned, and the message said that her captor would know when I was there. Staring at the phone skeptically, I shook my head. This was starting to resemble a horror movie more and more.

"Com'on, boy. I'm going to take you out. I know you've got to go," I spoke my dog as if he could actually talk back. Call me crazy, but I think sometimes he really does understand me.

Crawling out of bed, I stumbled down to the front room where I lace him up in his harness and leash. I grabbed a jacket, and opened the front door, humming Little White Lies by One Direction.

After a second, I realized I was face-to-face with an unexpected visitor.

"Oh! My! Gosh! Twin! What you doing here? You scared me," I chided my second best friend, surprised.

She laughed, "Girl, calm down. I heard about what happened to Desiree, I just wanted to make sure you were okay."

I cracked a smile, I could always count on my twin to come through. We looked nothing alike, in all honesty we were polar opposites at first glance. She was short with short wild hair and the body of a medal winning swimmer, me on the other hand was tall and skinny with long, curly hair.

"Yeah, I'm fine, we're going to find her. I won't give up till I do," I said with conviction in my voice.

Tonight no matter the price, I was going to bring her home.

Nodding she turned to leave but hesitated. "Twin, I've known you half my life, but I can't shake this feeling that something bad is going to happen to you. Be careful okay?"

I stared at her for a moment before nodding. She took the stairs two at a time before disappearing to wherever she was headed. As I walked my pup, I pondered her warning, thinking that tonight very well may be my last.
