She leans across the table and whispers in my ear, "I know what your assignment is, I'm here to help." My blood runs cold as she sits back in her chair giving me a determined look. We were sitting in a small diner, the flickering lights dimmed from years of use. Only one other person besides the few workers were here, but he was on the other side of the room.
"I don't know what your talking about," my confidence wavers slightly at the glint of anger in her eyes.
"Don't play dumb with me Skye!" Marie practically yells, "You've been assigned to take out that insane vampire. I have too, but unlike you I'm a werewolf, not some half blood."
A growl escapes from low in my throat at her insult, but she just continues. "We have to work together to get what we both want. I want into a nearby pack, you want into your mentor's clan. Only way to get this is to work together."
I stare at her debating with myself wether or not I can truly trust her. Letting out the breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding I say, "What do you know about our prey?"
She smirks in triumph. "He has a signature, a pound symbol behind the right ear of his victims. This is all some sort of game to him, he likes to play with his food before he eats you could say. The selection is random, but the numbers are increasing rapidly. I suggest you say goodbye to your fun in the sun, your time is coming to an end soon."
I gasp and stare at her in horror. She was going to kill me. This was all some sick twisted attempt to take me out. The look on my face must have given it away because her eyes widened and she shook her head quickly. "No, all I meant was your about to go through your transition. You've hit maturity."
"You're lying, I'm not due to hit maturity till another year or so."
"Well I don't know why you're hitting it early but you are. It's going to start in about..." Her nose scrunches up in the most adorable way. Wait? What am I thinking? She's a werewolf. "Come on, we have to get you to your room. It's going to start in about 30 minutes." She stands and grabs my arm dragging me out of the diner with unbelievable strength.
"W-why should I believe you?" I'd known her all of 2 days. There was no way I was going to follow someone blindly.
Giving me a death glare she speaks through her teeth, "Because... Your life depends on it." With that she turns around and hails us a cab.
20 minutes later
Marie had brought me back to my room and I was suffering from a really bad headache. "Do you have any aspirin on you?" I ask but she just eyes me strangely and walks off to close all the curtains, blocking out the sun.
"Hand me your phone," she demands once she's finished her task. Skeptically I hand it too her after unlocking it. She makes a phone call and all she says before hanging up is, "It's happening."
I fall to the ground, crippled by a piercing pain. Convulsions rip through my body as she runs to my side trying to keep me from hurting my self. Soon the pain becomes to much and I fade into unconsciousness.
When I finally come too it's night outside, the cells in my body tell me. Something doesn't feel right though, as if I'd changed in a way. I look around the room, my vision hazy. My muscles ache as I lean back groaning.
"Hey take it easy," says a soft voice. Something damp and cool is placed over my forehead. "You need to feed. Your mentor brought you a couple of blood bags."
Opening one eye slightly I look up at Marie's concerned face. "Blood," I croak out. My voice sounds forced, as if it hadn't been used in years. She nods before scrambling off and returning with a cold bag of blood. Bringing it to my lips I bite into the plastic I gulp deeply, emptying it in a matter of seconds.
Feeling some of my strength return I push myself up into a sitting position. "What happened?" Marie looks at me with worry evident on her face, but eventually she explains. In short, after I passed out my body went into an accelerated growth process as the vampiric virus fully took over my body. I was now a full fledged vampire.
Standing up I stroll to the mini fridge and take out a second blood bag. Ripping it open I pour the contents into a styrofoam cup and take a small sip. "You should rest," she chides me in a parental tone.
I sneer at her, "I'll rest when the sun rises. For now come on, we have a vampire to subdue." With that I go and throw on some fresh clothes before leading Marie to the roof top.
"A couple of girls in the apartment building next to mine has been missing for a couple of days. They were roommates." She tells me while I take in the skyline.
"Do you know where he holds his hostages?" She nods. "If you know all of this, why haven't you taken him out yet."
She looks to the ground ashamed, "I'm too weak. He could easily over power me and then this city would never be safe. This is more than just a job for me..." Looking at her I nod before directing her to take me to his hide out.
-
We laid flat on our stomachs while peering at the door of a sparsely populated apartment building. The target had entered about an hour ago, and hadn't left yet. A small noise causes me too look up at the roof of the building we were watching, the sight that greets me causes my heart to stop.
"Skye, what are-" I put my hand over her mouth and turn her head in the direction I was staring. Against my hand I feel her mouth 'Oh', and I slowly retract my hand.
On the ledge of the roof stands a middle age woman with a man whispering in her ear. She closes her eyes and takes a step off the roof falling 20 stories to her death. Beside me Marie gasps, a shiver running through her body. I jump to my feet, making eye contact with the smirking vampire across the street. Backing up a few feet, I tense my muscles and prepare myself for the task ahead.
"See you on the other side," I tell a confused Marie before running and launching myself across the gorge between buildings. Upon landing I take a fighting stance, "You killed that innocent women."
His cold lifeless eyes bore into me, shaking his head he makes a tsk-ing song. "When will all you imbeciles understand? Those humans are meant to be nothing more than our food source." With a casual shrug he cracks his knuckles and in a blink of an eye he has me by my throat. Struggling against his deathly grip I can't help but think this very well may be my last day alive.
A growl from behind him causes him to turn around but he's to late, a gray wolf is already on him. Letting go of my throat, I crumple to the ground gasping for air. The two fight, yelps of pain and blood filling the air around me. After what seems a life time I'm able to climb to my feet, immediately jumping into the fight.
The wolf looks at me with worry evident in its eyes, which I ignore as I charge the ludicrous vampire. In his weakened state it should be easy to finish him. Wrapping my arm around his neck I slowly diminish his air supply, much like he did me. Slowly the light fades from eyes and I pull out the knife that resides in my pocket.
"This seems almost too easy," Marie says having changed back into her human form. Looking at her intently, i nod once before stabbing him in the chest piercing his heart.
Laughter from an adjoining roof catches our attention. It's a laugh of sick and twisted delight, my heart drops. Looking at Marie I see that my worst fears have been confirmed. "Shit," I mutter under my breath.
Together we look out over the vast city, knowing that our trial was not yet over. Some where out there, was another rouge vampire. Primed and ready for his next kill, we'd just fallen into his trap.
