Chapter #34

November 26th 2008

Mary’s POV

“Morning everyone!” Melanie’s voice rings through the penthouse from the entry. “Remind me why I gave my mom a key?” Scarlett jokes. “Oh you know you love me besides for once I’m not here for  you, Jan and the kids.” Melanie says. “Ye arenae?” Janny asks with the bairns in her lap. “No, she's here for me.” I say. “Mom, be nice Mary is a good person. She isn’t the woman you met in 2005.” Scarlett warns. “Scarlett, first of all I love that you want to protect Mary even from me. Second, I know that. We are having a day just the two of us to get to know each other and start over.” Melanie says. “Oh right sorry.” Scarlett says. “Forgiven. Are you ready Mary? We should head  out now if you want to see the places on your list.” Melanie says. “Aye. All ready, let's get our day started.” I smile, “Bi math dha do mhathraichean fhad ‘s a tha mi air falbh, nigheanan. (Be good for your moms while I’m gone, girls.)” I say giving them each a kiss.

“Ok Mary where do you want to start?” Melanie asks. “I made a list of places I want tae go tae in the order I want tae visit.” I say pulling out a piece of paper from my purse. “Ok Empire State Building here we come.” She says. “So tell me about yourself.” Melanie says. “Well I was raised on Isle Barra that is west of Skye.” I tell her. “How did you end up in Inverness then? Isn’t it like halfway across the country?” She asks. “Aye tis here this is a Clan map of Scotland.” I say pulling out my small map that I take with me everywhere and showing it tae her. “You just carry a clan map with you?” She asks. “It was given tae me by my Mum. Tis one of the few things I have from her. She gave it tae me before I moved tae Inverness for University tae be a nurse.” I explain. “Ok so that’s how you got to Inverness.” She says. “But it says the MacLeans are over  here on the west coast. And I remember from the wedding that most of the MacLeans lived on the west coast around the clan's land.” She says confused, “Oh aye they dae. Ye ken that Angus was in the army?” I ask. “I didn’t know that, no.” She says as she pays for our tickets to go up the Empire State Building. “Well he used tae be stationed at the same base that Janny is now. That’s how they ended up in Inverness. And his love of Nessie kept him there.” I chuckle. “You said you were a nurse.” Melanie says. “Aye I was that’s why Janny decided tae be a medic when she joined. Wow the view is bonnie.” I say looking out over New York. “It really is.” She agrees.

Scarlett’s POV

"You don't think they are swapping embarrassing stories from our childhoods do you?" I ask Jan. "I didnae till ye asked." She says. "Our Mum's are becoming mates we are fucked mo Ghradh." She groans. "It can't be that bad. Can it?" I ask. “You let our mom hang out with Janet’s Mom?” Christian asks. “We dinnae let them, they are allowed tae dae what they want.” Jan says. “You two are screwed.” He laughs. “Ugh nooooo.” I whine as I dramatically flop down on the couch resting my head on Jan’s lap. “I’ll cook you poor souls lunch.” Christian says. “He is enjoying this way tae much.” Jan says. “Yeah he is.” I agree.

Mom and Mary come in laughing about something that happened today. I'm glad to see Jan and I’s moms getting along so well. "Ah ye are right on time, supper will be ready soon." Jan says, stepping out of the kitchen with Riley strapped to her chest. “Are ye cooking yer Gran’s Scotch pies?” Mary asks. “Scarlett had asked for them. But ye ken how Gran is. She is very strict on who she will or willnae give her recipes tae. “What is a scotch pie?” Mom asks. “It’s a type of meat dish I promise you will love it.” I tell her.

Janet’s POV

We all sat at the dinner table enjoying the light conversations as we ate. “Oh Janny. Melanie tells me that every year they put up a huge tree at Rockefeller Center. I think it would be fun tae have a family day out there after it’s up and maybe even skate a wee bit.” Mum says. “That sounds like a great idea Mum. I just hope I deh fall on my arse tae much. We all ken I’m shite at skating.” I say the last bit jokingly. “Mammy ye shouldnae say bad words. Ye say bad words more than Mommy” I get scolded by my two year old bairn. “Ye ken ye are right Aingeal those are bad words. I will try not tae say them as much.” I say. “Come on Claire, let's get ready for bed, it's getting late.” Scarlett says and the pair walk off tae Claire's room tae get Claire ready for bed.

“Did ye notice how Claire said my name tonight?” I ask Scarlett as we are cuddled up in bed. “I did. Maybe she has noticed how similar Mum and Mom sound so she is saying differently that way we know who she is talking to. She’s pretty smart for her age. “Aye ye are right about that.” I say with a proud smile thinking of how Claire is smart enough tae learn Scots Gaelic and English at the same time. “I’m always right.” Scar says with  a cheeky grin. “I ken better than tae argue with ye on that one Hen.” I say making  her laugh and nod her head. “Now let’s get some sleep, yeah?” I say and she nods again this time placing her head in my neck so she can cuddle as close as she can. “I love ye mo Ghradh.”  I tell her with a kiss on the head. “I love you too, my Scotswoman.” She says and I can feel her smile against my skin.
