"Yeah," Steve said, "I don't need to hear that."
Morgan retorted, "Try living with it."
Bucky cleared his throat and moved away from Tony, knowing what he was doing, as he said, "Anyway, what should we do first?"
Just as Bucky expected, Arianna said, "Get the nanites out. Any HYDRA agent just needs to get close enough and they can reactivate them."
Steve added without thinking, "And my trigger words ensure obedience."
Tony began to ask, "So, deprogramming-"
Steve knew he couldn't keep it from them not that it had come out, so he had to tell them how his words were tied to the nanites. "Made it so that I will be conscious for it all."
Arianna hugged him tightly and tearfully said, "Oh my God, Steve! Why didn't you say anything?"
He poured himself a drink and stared at it. "Because I wanted to be free so bad, I ignored them."
He he downed the brandy in a single gulp. The truth was, he hadn't planned on going back to the compound or anywhere outside of Wakanda. And if he were to stay isolated, there would be no reason to remove the nanites. He had hoped that they would have been dissolved by the serum, but after that first year, he gave up on the notion. Isolation from the world was the safest option.
Tony said in horror, "So, you could have been pumping Ari full of nanites?"
Steve's head snapped up. He had always assumed the nanites were stuck in his blood and muscles, controlling his every thought and move. He hadn't thought about it infecting his seed as well. And he had never worn protection with Arianna.
"Shit!" the blond super soldier replied, guilt filling him. "I didn't even think about that!"
Arianna tried to comfort him by saying, "It's not your fault, Steve."
"For now," Bucky suggested, "let's get Ari scanned and see if anything sticks out."
Arianna looked at her cousin and his husband. "And stop it before it becomes a problem."
A memory, dim and hazy, tried to play in Arianna's mind, but no matter how hard she tried to focus on it, the images were just out of reach. She shook her head and walked with her family to the lab to ask Shuri to take a look.
