Chapter 5- Love Bites
"Arghh!"
Isobel woke up to hearing what she thought was a scream.
"It was nothing, probably just a dream"
She thought, not even bothering to open her eyes. She tucked her head back into her pillow, and nuzzled her nose up to the warm, but cool enough blanket to have in the Kalahari desert, and started to allow her body to relax again.
"Ahhh, I'll eat you when I find you! And cut off that stinger of yours! Arghhh!"
Isobel opened her eyes this time, and sat up painfully.
"I know I didn't just imagine that!" She said a-matter-of-factly.
She hopped out of bed with enough ease not to make herself dizzy from her wound, and glanced out her bedroom door.
She could hear Jeremiah muttering angrily to himself, and partially wimpering. It sounded like he was also rummaging through the cupboards in the kitchen, knocking down pots and pans. She heard him fall and groan, followed by clanging metal.
Isobel rushed into the kitchen.
"Jeremiah!? What in heavens sake are you doing?" Isobel said, seeing the state of the kitchen.
Jeremiah was clutching his left hand, staring blankly at it. He was quite pale, and looked like he was going to faint.
"I-I got stung by a scorpion" he said stuttering.
Isobel rushed up to him, trying to help him up.
"You need medical attention, and fast!"
"Too far away from the city!" He sputtered with great effort. "You have to tend to me!" He pointed at Isobel.
"Me? I don't know a clue about dressing a wound! Yet alone a scorpion bit which can very likely result in death!" She yelled, finally getting him to the table.
"Your a smart girl, I have faith in you!" He said with a slight grin.
Isobel nodded at him, not really believing that she could do it, but wanted to help him.
Then she remembered something she had learned recently on TV, relating to poisonous bites, and how to tend to them with home remedies!
Thank you God! She thought to her self.
Isobel quickly started throwing open every cupboard she could lay her hands on, in hope of finding any gauze and medications.
When she looked everywhere in the kitchen, and couldn't find one useful thing, she glared at Jeremiah.
"Where is a first aid kit?" She screeched, slamming one of her hands unto the counter, and the other one on her hip.
Jeremiah winced a small smile.
"In my bedroom, under my bed!" He nodded.
"Thank you!" Isobel said with a slight attitude, turning on her heels abruptly, and running towards his bedroom.
"Men," she huffed to herself as she started looking under his bed. "There no help I tell ya!"
She was rummaging as fast as she could through all the junk under his bed, and just couldn't find the first aid kit.
"Where is that dumb ole thing-"
She was interrupted by her nail bashing into a metal box. She quickly pulled out the box, and was relieved to see that it was indeed the first aid kit.
"Ouch, my nail!" She yelled, grasping her hand, and then running back out to the kitchen.
"You owe me a manicure as soon as soon as I can make it outta here," she said, holding up her hurt finger. "I broke a nail, trying to find this kit!"
Jeremiah grimaced, "Ohhh, so bad, compared to a scorpion bite!" He said sarcastically, holding up his hand.
"Oh right!" Isobel said, slowly bending down by his knees.
"Girls!" Jeremiah muttered to himself, chuckling inwardly.
"Hey, just remember who's trying to save your life right now buddy!" She laughed, making her eyes twinkle, even though she was in pain, and was fearing for Jeremiah's life.
As she was scrambling through the kit, Jeremiah studied her with intensity.
She was still wearing her purple and blue polka dot pj pants, with a purple tank top that clung and outlined her hips perfectly. She also had on fuzzy, hot pink slippers, that were definitely a couple size too big. Her hair was in a tangled blonde mess, that kept getting in her face every time she moved.
"Got any baking soda or ammonia?" She questioned.
"Both! There in that cupboard." Jeremiah pointed.
Isobel quickly reached for the cupboard and grabbed them both.
First she took out the stinger from Jeremiah's hand, and put some numbing ointment and Tylenol ointment on it that she had managed to find in the first aid kit.
She then ended with dumping some baking soda and ammonia on some gauze, taped it to his hand, and put a ice pack over it.
Jeremiah looked at her puzzled when she was putting the baking soda, and ammonia on the gauze.
She chuckled, "Animal Planet! I remember them talking about someone getting stung or something. They showed what to do if your too far away from a hospital. That show teaches me just about everything."
She picked up a glass, and filled it with some water.
"Here, drink this. You look like you need it!" She motioned to Jeremiah, who had sweat beads all over his face.
"My hand is already starting to feel better!" He said examining his hand, noticing that it had stopped swelling.
"Thanks so much for helping me, I thought I was going to die!" He said looking away from his hand, and at her.
"No problem," She smiled. "It was only by God's grace."
