Chapter 10- A One Person Argument

"No. How could I? Why would I?" Jeremiah questioned himself, pacing his bedroom floor. "Why trust a god that takes away? That makes your life miserable? That says he is some god of love, when really he is one of hate?"

Jeremiah sat on his bed and cupped his head in his hands. His bed creaked from beneath his weight and sounded as if it would cave.

It had been 5 years since Rachel had called off the engagement, and yet he couldn't shake his love for her and the bitter thoughts that came with it.

"It was my only choice. You told yourself that you would never return. It is either this or a lifetime in prison. No regrets. No regrets. No regrets," Jeremiah comforted himself. But it was of no use. Isobel had fanned a flame that had long been extinguished. "This is pathetic, be a man!" Jeremiah shouted, standing up and throwing his bed pillow at the wall.

"You have had this swallowed down for years, and now suddenly some child comes along and mentions God and his goodness, and you're all choked up?" Jeremiah started pacing the floor again with rage.

"This restaurant is lovely Jeremiah," Rachel smiled.

Jeremiah had taken her to "Shellie's Chow," a seafood restaurant on the edge of town. It was a five star restaurant, a two hour wait, and a crowded building; but it was worth the wait for this special night.

Dressed for the occasion, Jeremiah wore his pressed suit that his father had once worn. A deep crimson red, with a black stitching. A black bow tie finished the outfit tight to his neck, but he didn't mind. He was determined to wear his fathers outfit for the sake of honor.

Rachel looked radiant wearing a floor length black dress. It was pinched up on the right side with a grey satin flower. Her heels matched, grey as well with delicate rhinestones on the straps. Her hair pinned to the side, finish with a curled knot, she looked like an angel to Jeremiah.

"I am glad you are enjoying it. Now, whos the man?" Jeremiah teased, puffing his collar.

"Oh stop it, act mannerly!" Rachel giggled, her cheeks darkening. She looked out the window happily, "This is so picturesque. The best spot in the restaurant. The river with the city lights bouncing off the water, the jazz music in the background, you smiling at me. I couldn't be a happier woman!"

Jeremiah smiled smugly, "Well, Uh, I do think that there could be something that would make you an even happier woman."

"Oh really? I'm listening. Wait, no! Let me guess!" Rachel playfully stroked her chin. "A new car?"

"Nope."

"A trip to Hawaii?"

"Not even close, though that does sound nice huh?"

"Those super cute heels I showed you at the mall?"

"And now you are really cold." Jeremiah shook his head. "Here. Let me show you. I have it right here, you just got to close your eyes," He smiled.

"Oh Jeremiah, you know how I hate surprises! But alright. There closed!" Rachel squeezed her eyes tightly.

Jeremiah slid out of his chair quietly and nodded to the band. The jazz band picked up a different tune instantly, and played with such skill.

"Hey, I love this song!" Rachel squealed, a big grin forming across her face.

"I know," Jeremiah bent down on one knee. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a delicate diamond band. "You can open now."

Rachel opened her eyes and let a quiet scream when she saw the ring.

"Jeremiah! Are you serious?"

"With all my heart," he assured her. "I love you so much Rachel, and I cannot imagine one more day without you in my life. You complete me, and I complete you. Together, we would make a great team. So what I want to know is , will marry me?"

"Oh yes, of course! I love you too" Rachel exclaimed, looking at her new shiny ring on her finger. "It is stunning Jeremiah!"

"I know what you like," Jeremiah praised himself. "Now who is the man again?" He asked playfully, leaning in for a kiss.

"Oh Jere," Rachel smiled and lovingly kissed him.

Jeremiah collected his thoughts with even more rage. He fell to his knees, starting to weep.

"Why did you take everything away from me?!" Jeremiah screamed, hoping that if there was a God, He would just maybe hear him.
