"So, what's..." She paused, taking in a deep breath as she licked her lips. "What's your deal?" Lucy finally got out as she followed Y/n up a hill of sand, the man in red and black pausing to look around as he tightened his grip on the suitcase.
"What are you talking about?" Y/n asked as they came to a stop, looking around at the destroyed buildings and whatnot, glancing at the vault dweller as she finally caught up to him, still holding the head by its hair.
"The lady back there knew I wasn't from here because of how I look," Lucy huffed as she looked around, taking a deep breath as she looked at the man next to her, watching him inspect the pip-boy on his wrist. "And when I thought about it, you look nothing like the raiders," she sighed.
"Because I'm not a raider," Y/n said with a matter-of-fact tone as he shook his head and continued walking, Lucy watching him for a moment before following suit. "I'm a mercenary," He explained.
"A what?"
"A mercenary, sweetheart, it means when people are having issues with other people, they come to me," Y/n said as he led them over to one of the buildings, stopping next to it, letting out a relieved sigh to be out of the sigh, Lucy joining him under to shade.
"Like a mediator?"
"Yes, like a mediator... Who deals with the problem using lead," Y/n explained, tapping the pistol on his hip to further his point.
"You kill them?"
"Now you're getting," Y/n said with a smile as he drew a bottle of water from his bag and cracked it open.
"So you kill people for a price?"
"Basically, yes?" Y/n said as he took a big sip of his water. "There normally are more rules than just giving me some caps and telling me who I need to... Mediat with..." He added, finally looking at the tired brunette, pausing for a moment before rolling his eyes and grabbing his backpack again. "Here," He hummed as he handed her a bottle of water.
"Huh?" Lucy looked up at him and then the bottle before slowly taking it. "Thanks," She added as she opened it and sipped it. "So, were you paid to... Um..."
"No, I was not paid to help them in the vault," Y/n answered her as he inspected his guns, checking the mags and then the chamber. "I owed Moldaver... A lot so when she came to me with this request, it would have paid her back."
"What do you owe her?"
Y/n had heard the question but his mind to some time to understand it as he just stared off into the distance. "My life..."
***************
Destruction was all that there was, days of walking had not helped once, the destroyed buildings didn't change, the empty roads never became busy, and cold winds never became warmer.
An eight-year-old boy walked through the destroyed streets, a broken pip-boy clenched to his chest as he stumbled around, the setting sun brought the cold of the night with it and Y/n wasn't sure what he was supposed to do now, where was he supposed to go? What was he supposed to eat? It had been several days at this point and he wasn't sure how much longer he could continue this.
"Hey boy," A voice called out and Y/n saw a man walking over to him. "What's that you got there?" He asked, his eyes focused on the large item in Y/n's arms, the young boy only clenched it tighter as he stepped back, trying to put distance between him and the man.
"Nothing..." Y/n mumbled as he watched the man, his grip only tightening on the pip-boy.
"Then why don't you give it to me, I'm looking for nothing," The man scoffed as he got closer, his hand reaching out towards Y/n.
