My second year at Hogwarts was supposed to be easier. I should have been used to the enchanted hallways, the moving staircases, and the quirky professors. But no amount of magic could prepare me for the chaos of having a crush. Especially when that crush was on Shotaro, a third-year Slytherin.
Every History of the Dark Arts class was a nightmare and a dream come true at the same time. Professor Vance droned on about ancient curses and dark wizards, but my attention was always on Shotaro. The way his black hair fell over his forehead, his focused gaze, and the way his mouth curved when he was deep in thought—it was all I could think about.
"So, are you going to ask him to the Trigon Ball, or what?" Mark asked, breaking me out of my reverie.
"Yeah, Sungchan, you've been mooning over him for months," Renjun chimed in, his Ravenclaw logic always so annoyingly precise.
"I can't just walk up to him and ask him out," I muttered, poking at my lunch. "He's a Slytherin. I'm a Gryffindor. He probably thinks I'm a dumb jock."
"You're not a dumb jock," Jeno said, his Hufflepuff loyalty shining through. "You're just... a bit of an idiot when it comes to crushes."
"Thanks," I said dryly.
Mark rolled his eyes. "Look, the Trigon Ball is in two days. If you don't ask him, someone else might. And then you'll be stuck watching him dance with someone else all night."
"Fine. I'll think about it," I said, though the thought of actually talking to Shotaro made my stomach churn.

Two days passed in a blur of classes and failed attempts to gather the courage to talk to Shotaro. Before I knew it, it was the day of the Trigon Ball. I was dressed in my best suit, but my heart wasn't in it. My friends had dates, but I was still alone.
The Great Hall was transformed into a sparkling wonderland. Enchanted snowflakes fell from the ceiling, and fairy lights twinkled in the air. I found a seat in the corner, hoping to disappear into the background.
"Hey," a voice said, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I looked up to see Shotaro standing there, looking as perfect as ever in his green and silver dress suit. My heart skipped a beat. "Uh, hey," I managed to say.
"You look lonely," he said with a small smile. "Want to dance?"
I stared at him, unable to believe my ears. "Are you serious?"
"Yeah, unless you don't want to," he said, looking a bit nervous.
"No! I mean, yes, I want to," I said quickly, getting up so fast I almost knocked my chair over. "I just... I didn't think you'd want to dance with me."
"Why not?" he asked, leading me to the dance floor.
"Because you're... you," I said lamely.
Shotaro laughed. "And you're you. I think that works out pretty well."
We started dancing, and I couldn't believe how easy it was to talk to him. He was funny, kind, and so much more than just the Slytherin I had admired from afar. As we moved to the music, I realized how silly I had been to be so scared.
"I've actually wanted to talk to you for a while," Shotaro admitted as the song changed to a slower one. "But I didn't think you'd be interested."
"Are you kidding? I've had a crush on you since the first day of History of the Dark Arts," I blurted out, immediately blushing.
