Chapter Two

April 2018

"They still won the game though" Ryan's voice snapped her out of her thoughts, she was lying in the back seat as her brothers drove her to the hospital.

Sam was in the passenger seat trying to call their parents. They didn't pick up. As usual.

"You know, the guard was completely out of line" Ryan continued "I saw her push into you" Maria felt sick, she didn't want to think about what had happened. She wished that it was all just a silly dream and that she'd wake up and crawl into her brothers bed, and he'd reassure her it wasn't real and she could go back to sleep peacefully.

She even tried closing her eyes, hoping that when she opened them she'd be back at home in her bed. But she wasn't, she was still in the car. Her brothers still trying to comfort her, and the pain still getting worse. The next few hours felt like a blur to Maria. It seemed as if she was experiencing everything in third person. After they arrived at the hospital, they waited and waited until Maria got an MRI and then they waited more for what seemed like hours until finally the doctor called them back into her office.

Maria looked around the office, trying to avoid eye contact from anyone she could. It felt as if all eyes were on her. She found herself staring at the doctors name tag 'Dr S. Johnson' it read. She could hear her talking but she wasn't listening, she couldn't listen. Until a few words caught her attention.

"Acl tear.... No sport..... Eight to Twelve months.... Maria.... Maria are you listening?" Dr Johnson questioned her.

Maria nodded, her new reality setting in on her She tried to hold back the tears brimming in her eyes but with little luck. She hated crying, she hated any signs of weakness but right now all she could do was sob into Dr Johnson's shoulder. The doctor let her, brushing her hair out of her face.

"It will all be okay, don't worry" She reassured the teary eyed girl in front of her.

Easy for her to say.

The ride home was silent, apart from the occasional buzzing from Maria's phone. She picked it up, the bright screen shining in her face, several messages from her team popping up.
