Chapter Nine

Paige turned in her bed unable to sleep. The sound of birds chirping outside her window and the light slipping in through the curtains wasn't the only thing keeping her up though. A certain moment with a certain brunette was replaying in her mind. She'd forgot what it was like to actually be sort of friends with Maria, and she hadn't realised how much she missed it. She looked over at Azzi, who was fast asleep in her bed. She grabbed her phone from beside her bed to try distract herself. It was too early in the morning to get up and do anything but too late to try go back to sleep. She checked her notifications, a message Geno sent the previous night catching her eye.
Hi Team, just a reminder that tomorrow Andrea's interns will be doing quick check ups with each of you as part of their assignment. Please be on time to training. -Geno
Paige had forgotten the team would actually have to work with the students. She looked at the time on her phone, there were still four hours before training started, she could go to the gym and get some reps in beforehand, plus it would help to take her mind off...things.
Paige changed quickly, grabbing a gatorade bottle and protein bar before leaving to go to the gym. Azzi was a heavy sleeper and didn't stir as Paige quietly closed the door behind her. She put her airpods in, blasting Resentment by PartyNextDoor as she pushed open the door to the weight room. She didn't notice the couple at the end of the room doing drills on the punching bags. Paige was in her own world as she lay down on the bench press. She counted the reps in her head completely oblivious to the girl at the end of the room who had stopped to stare at her.
"Maria come on, back to work" Her training partner tapped her lightly on the shoulder.
"Sorry Ethan" Maria shook her head, squaring up to the bag again before punching it. Sharp and fast. Ethan was taken aback by the power in her punch. Maria didn't usually punch hard, it was her quickness that made her dangerous in the ring, but this combination of both power and speed was impressive.
"Ayy, that's it" Ethan was surprised but pleased by the sudden change in her demeanour. Maria was always lazy during their morning sessions and the sharp punches had caught him off guard.
Paige got up from the bench press to grab a drink, turning off her music as she did so. Suddenly becoming aware of the fact she wasn't alone in the gym, she looked around to see where the noise was coming from, her eyes falling on a familiar girl. She watched as she laughed at something the guy she was with said. Why did everyone else seem to make Maria laugh so easily when the only emotion Paige seemed to be able to get from her was annoyance. If Maria couldn't be nice to her, she wouldn't be nice to her either, Paige decided. She packed up her things, looking back at Maria as she got up. She wasn't staying in the same room as her. She left the gym quickly and quietly hoping that it would go unnoticed. Out of the corner of her eye, Maria watched as Paige left in a hurry, wondering what could have caused the blonde to leave with such urgency.
