Seth and I left Manchester having had a good night's sleep and a healthy full English breakfast. The sun was out and all the sorrow and sadness from last night had been washed away by the excitement that today was the day of the ball. All we had to do was get the amplifier back to Scotland and hope nothing else had gone wrong while we'd been across the border.

There'd been very little traffic on the roads on the journey back and we'd made good time, getting back to the highlands by eleven o'clock in the morning. The house seemed dead as we arrived, a ghost town caught in the calm before the storm that would come with the ball later that evening. Seth left me in the hallway to go and find Angus to help him lift the amp from the back of the land rover.

I dumped my bag on the hall floor and went in search of Lola and Lexie. Wandering through the house and its quiet rooms was eerie and strange like everyone had disappeared. There was no one in sitting room or the dining room, so I headed towards the kitchen to see if Lexie was anywhere to be seen.

The door was closed when I got there, pushing it open I saw two people locked in an embrace near the wooden table, Lola was making out with Robbie. Feeling embarrassed I shuffled backwards and closed the door. Hang on a minute! Lola was kissing Robbie! When had that happened?

I pushed the door open and walked back into the kitchen to find Lola and Robbie now parted and red faced. Neither looked at me as I stood looking flabbergasted at what I'd just found in the kitchen. "How? When?" I waited in silence until finally both of them looked at each and then to me. Robbie took Lola's hand in his and smiled apologetically.

"Well it just sort of happened one night, I went round to Lola's expecting to find you there and we got chatting and one thing lead to another and –"

"I don't need to know all the gory details. How long has it been going on?" I didn't know how I felt about my best friend and my brother being together, it was a little bit awkward but if they were happy together then so was I. I really didn't want to turn into Ross from Friends.

"About a year." Lola looked at the ground and spoke very softly, completely out of character for her. "Look Evie, there's something we need to tell you. We aren't just dating, Rob proposed just before I came up here. We're getting married." My mouth literally dropped open at her confession, how had I not known about this? How had I not even suspected that something was going on between the two of them?

I watched as the two of them looked worriedly at each other before returning their gazes back to me. They looked completely in love with each other and who was I to deny true love. My face burst into a wide grin as I walked over to the two of them and pulled them into a huge bear hug. The tension left their bodies as soon as my arms enclosed them.

"I'm really happy for you guys, congratulations. One question though; why didn't tell me?" I pulled back waiting for their answer.

"We weren't sure how you would take it and then the adoption came out and it didn't feel like the right time." Lola smiled as Robbie pulled her into his body and rested his head on top of hers.

"Let me see the ring then! I hope this means I'm still your maid of honour, you did promise me when we were eight years old I would be." I pouted as Lola pulled a silver chain from around her neck, she undid it and placed the silver diamond ring on her engagement ring finger. I pulled her hand towards me and whistled at the small but not insignificant rock gleaming up at me.

"Very nice. I didn't know you had such good taste in jewellery." I let go of Lola's hand and smiled at Robbie, he looked genuinely besotted with my best friend and I couldn't have been happier. "So, anything happen while I was away last night?"
