DREAD WOULD BE TOO much of a strong word to explain it. Perhaps it was just nerves. Monday morning finally came and Hannah and Danielle were eating breakfast by the wooden table that seperated the kitchen and the living room.
Hannah wondered if she could make new friends. She wasn't exactly the most sociable person. She figured Danielle probably could. She has always been better at making friends. It's almost as if it's second nature to her. She can't blame her sister, though, because that's just who she is. She's too kind for her own good.
Her biggest worry is that. Horrid people taking advantage of Danielle. Hopefully there are people out there who don't take her for granted.
The two girls walk to school together. Danielle insisted. She talked as they walked. Hannah listened and nodded every so often.
Atleast their new uniform is nicer than their one in Australia, Hannah thought. It was simple, but nice nontheless. A black skirt, white shirt, a stripy tie and either a brown cardigan or a brown blazer. Danielle decided to wear the cardigan while Hannah chose the other.
When they reached the school gates, Hannah quickly pulled up her white socks to sit just below her knees. The pair walked in and headed towards the head teacher's office.
They were told to arrive twenty minutes early, so they did. The head teacher yapped for about an extra ten minutes, which was more than he needed to. Eventually, they were sent to their homeroom classes, which is where they would stay for all of their classes, to meet their teacher.
Of course, they had to wait until the bell rang so that everyone else was settled in. Hannah was nervous, but she was about to fall asleep. It wasn't until her teacher called her name that she snapped back to reality.
"Hayoung?" Ms. Cho said as she looked towards Hannah. As Hannah walked into the classroom, about twenty pairs of eyes stared at her. She bowed slightly before Ms. Cho told her to sit down somewhere.
There was a girl, who sat by the window in the back row, with her head was on the desk and she seemed to be sleeping. "Miss Kang!" Ms. Cho called out, and the girl who was sleeping looked up with tired eyes.
Just as Hannah was about to sit on the free seat next to her, she recognised the girl to be Haerin, the cat girl that she met in that alley way on saturday.
She sat on the seat and placed her back on the floor beside her. "Please don't be taking naps in my classroom, now, Haerin." Ms. Cho smiled at the girl before getting on with the lesson.
When break came, a few people left the classroom, but most stayed and chatted between friends. Hannah turned in Haerin's direction and nervously called her name, "Um, Haerin?"
Haerin looked at her and a wave of recognisation flashed across her face. "Hayoung. I didn't expect you to be here. You're new?" She asked and rested her chin on her hand.
Hannah nodded, "Yeah, well, you were sleeping when Ms. Cho introduced me to the class."
Haerin chuckled slightly, "Yeah, i guess i was. Where did you transfer from? Did you come from the city, or something?"
"Em, well, kind of." She paused as she smiled sheepishly, "I used to live in Australia."
Haerin's eyebrows raised as her mouth made an 'o' shape. "Australia? I see... Have you ever lived here before then?"
Hannah nodded, "Only for three years when i was two. I moved back to Australia when i was five." She looked away in thought, "When i found out that we'd be leaving Australia, i was so upset. I guess i still am, but it's not as bad as i thought it'd be."
Haerin nodded in understanding and looked at Hannah, "I understand. I've only ever lived here. It's pretty cozy. Maybe... Maybe you'd enjoy it more with friends." She paused and chuckled sheepishly, "Would you like to meet my friends during lunch? They're not in our class, but maybe you'd come to like them."
Hannah blushed and nodded with a smile, "Yeah, that would be great. Thanks, Haerin."
By the time lunch arrived, Hannah and Haerin had been talking throughout class and even got told off for it at one point. When they did, they held back their laughter and pretended to carry on with the work.
As Hannah and Haerin were walking out of the classroom, she overheard a few people's conversations. One in particular caught her attention. It was one about herself and Haerin. She didn't know if it was a good thing or a bad thing. Perhaps it wasn't either, but it was a little unsettling.
Why did they question the reason i was talking to Haerin? Why would it be weird for someone to talk to Haerin...? The little fraction of their conversation that Hannah heard was them questioning why they were talking.
"Um, Haerin?" Haerin looked at Hannah with a raised eyebrow, "Yes?"
"I kinda overheard a few classmates' conversation... And they were being weird about us talking. Would you happen to know why?" She asked hesitantly, not knowing if it might be a sensitive subject, or not.
Haerin looked ahead and sighed, "Well, i'm not sure why– Actually, that's a lie, i do... Basically, my friends are super popular and people think that i'm really difficult to approach." She pauses as she looks down at her shoes as she walks, "I don't exactly have any friends in my year. My friends are either in the year above or in the year below."
Hannah was a little shocked, to say the least. Why would anyone think that Haerin would be unapproachable? If anything, it's the opposite. Hannah pursed her lips with an expression that screamed "Huh?".
Hannah scoffed slightly, "Really? Difficult to approach?" She asked, and then looked at Haerin. "You're really easy to talk to."
A moment of silence passed as they arrived at the cafeteria. Haerin stopped infront of the door and looked at Hannah, "That make's me feel really happy, you know. Thanks, Hayoung."
"Hannah." Hannah corrected her and Haerin looked at her confusedly. As Haerin cocked her head to the side slightly, Hannah figured she should probably elaborate. "Hannah is my birth name and English name... I'd like it if you called me Hannah instead."
Haerin nodded and smiled slightly, "Okay then, Hannah. Lets go?" She said as she opened the doors to the cafeteria. Hannah followed her as she walked towards a table where four girls were already sat.
"Haerin-unnie!" One of them called out with a bright smile and waved. Haerin smiled and waved back. Two of them sat back with smiles, but curious eyes. The other one also called out, but not to Haerin, "Hannah!"
It was her sister, waving at her with another famous bright smile. "Dani?"
