Jana and I had just sat down on my couch, I was excited. I mean, this girl is amazing. Even though I don't show it well, I enjoy hanging out with her. Then I feel my phone buzz in my pocket. I hadn't recognized the number but it seemed familiar somehow. I have answered a lot of calls from this number. Although to be fair, I have worked with many different ones that could be half of L.A trying to call me. I got up from the couch and walked into my room. I trust Jana, but if it is bad news then I don't want her to know right away.
Plus it could be about a different case. I don't want to traumatize her any more than she already is. With that, I answered the call.
"Hello, this is Officer Tim Bradford.""Hi there Officer Bradford, that is Kaitlynn from CPS. I have been notified that you have a child in your custody right now?"
"Um, yes, I do. Is there a problem with that?"
"Maybe. I got a missing report for a girl named Jana White."
"How long has she been supposedly missing for?"
"Only an hour but the mom said that she never just disappears. She had mentioned that she likes to frequent your house."
"Yes, though that shouldn't be a missing person report though."
"The child just walked off, so yes it is a missing person."
" Yeah, Would there be any way this could be an emergency foster placement pending
investigation?"
"I will see what I can do, officer."
"Have a good night Officer."
"Thank you, you too."
That was the end. I will say that I messed up and I don't know what to do. I guess I will interview the mom and find out about their son. I mean I should have done this 3 years ago but the mom won't let me near her or Jana so I head to keep it on the down low. On a certain level, I connect with Jana and her brother. It reminds me of my relationship. I don't know what to tell Jana though. I mean do I tell her the truth, or should I tell her a little bit and not tell her any of the major details? You know that I should be open and honest with her. Right?
Yes, I should be fair; it's my gut feeling so I trust it. I mean, what harm can be done? She and I can have an open and honest conversation about it.
I walk back out into the living room and there she is fast asleep on the couch curled up next to Kojo who is also surprisingly asleep. I grab a blanket from the other side of the couch and I cover them up so then they stay warm throughout the night.
Well, this is not how I thought this was going to go, but here we are. I write a note saying that I am in my room sleeping and that he can come to get me if she needs anything to help herself to anything in the apartment and to make her feel at home. I lay in bed and texted Lucy since it was late, and I hadn't heard anything from her or Angela about the case they were working on.
Weirdly something feels off though, but I can't figure it out. Though I fall asleep before she answers, I guess it can wait for the morning.
