Eboni's eyes widened when she noticed how quickly Kai disappeared from the door way. She rose from her seat and thought it necessary to follow the twenty-one year old to the kitchen. A faint smile made its' way up the corner of her lips when she saw Malakai pour the broken portions of ramen noodles into a glass bowl of bowling water. She found it odd that he stuck the bowl in the microwave and set the timer for 99:99. Malakai rushed over to the fridge and grabbed a green apple then rubbed it against his chest frantically. Eboni shook her head. "Uh, Kai, you know what, I'm straight." Eboni waved off the offer, and added, "...Imma just wait to head out and have Malcolm get me something to eat on the way home." Malakai nodded his head, and walked over to where she stood in the gorgeous corridor.
"Alright." He stated. Eboni started at his back as he began to disappear around the corner, until Malakai abruptly glanced over his shoulder and arched an eyebrow. "Are you sure, you're not hungry? "
Eboni shrugged off his final attempt, thanking Kai for his kind hospitality. "Well, I'm about to run. Malcolm texted me a few minutes ago saying he was on his way to pick you up." Malakai turned off the microwave, then walked to the front door before he gave Eboni a final look and waved good-bye. "When you leave, just locked the door from the inside and close it. It'll lock shut I promise."
Eboni nodded, waving good-bye to her brother's best friend as he opened the door then closed it shut when he left out the house. Eboni stood in the corridor with her things, mentally kicking herself for liking a guy that cooks oodles and noodles in the microwave. The best way to eat them is always over the stove. Eboni groaned. Honestly, for him to spontaneously decide to leave the house for a jog was definitely beyond her. I mean, what kind of host is Malakai to just up and leave her in this gigantic home with nothing to do but watch television. Eboni threw her bookbag over her shoulder and walked down the silent corridor towards the front door.
Her footsteps echoed in the foyer, as she quickly shifted to the left and headed up those flight of stairs. Her hair whipped through the air as she quickly rushed up each step and ran down the upstairs corridor. Stopping at the very end, she turned right down another hallway, and into the first door on the right. Her hand reached towards the golden knob, despite the sweat that began to accumulate in her palm, and latched hold of it. She was nervous yet determined; afraid but motivated. Something great could be on the other side of this door.
Or something bad.
Eboni turned the doorknob in one swift turn and pushed it open. Inside was a large King sized bed with white pillows and bedsheets decorating the top. Eboni held her breath as she stepped inside the room, allowing her boots to touch the smooth carpeted floor. A mahogany desk sat against the furthest wall in the room, a granite dresser rested against the wall next to the door, and finally a mahogany headboard, decorated in intricate designs, rested at the head of the bed. White curtains draped in front of the balcony entrance, and pictures were placed all around the room. Eboni walked towards the bed and dropped her things upon it, before making her way towards the dresser. Where she picked up the first photo she saw.
The picture seemed to be taken at Malcolm's and Malakai's high school graduation. Malcolm and Malakai had met in kindergarten and stayed close friends ever since. They each attended the same school, until Malakai's foster mother moved into another school district right before they started high school together.
Eboni smiled at the picture as Malcolm and Kai both held their diplomas, each sporting ginormous smiles. Malakai wore a red cap and gown, while Malcolm wore purple. The two attended different high school, but they both graduated on the same day. After getting their diplomas, Eboni could remember the two of them rushing to mama's house so they could have their picture taken. But to the other's surprise, they ran into each other in the drive way. Not literally of course. Eboni's smile widened as she reminisced on the past memories. But she always found herself wondering, what ever happened to Malakai's mother? He never spoke of her, and barely said anything about how he ended up in foster care.
