"All you are to do, is guard my wife during her quest. See to it she is not harmed or grazed by any means and yet. Yet I find out my wife was rushed to the infirmary because she was almost struck with a bullet." Gunter sits himself upon the throne in the ballroom, his voice radiating darkness within the walls.
My eyes deadpan down to the polished flooring of the Michealangelo paintings, surveying the first warriors, heeding the bass of his words with the weight of a dark cloud looming above me as I knelt before the King and Queen.
I Settle in the middle of the ballroom floor, alone. Charlotte, ray, and many of the guards lined against the wall, their hands interlocked before them as they grimace to the new king.
"Raise your head." He commanded to me, and I crane my head up steadily with a deep glower plastered upon my face.
My eyes first catch Gunter, leaning back amongst the grand golden chair, an ankle resting on his knee, both arms rest on the armchairs as he looks down on me with delight, mused by the circumstance. And just aside him, is where she sat, the diamond amongst diamonds. Her long gown glimmers with millions of tiny green emeralds. Her curls glossy and healthy as she looks down to me conveying a sympathetic front.
"It is an insult by now to claim you as my loyal guard." He remarks. From my distance there was a whirl of darkness that begun to pool over the lining of his blue eyes. "Since you fail to do a simple task, perhaps elsewhere would benefit you."
Tiana flinched, her hand involuntarily flinging to touch Gunter by the wrist. "Husband you are being irrational." There was a tremble in her voice. "Our guard did his job. The man slipped right through all of us, but he made it in time to save my life. The bullet was laced with a poison, and I came out unscathed unlike him." Her voice carries a nurturing tone into the ballroom. Radiant, gentle. Slowly undoing the rage, I was bottling.
By the end of the statement, Gunters lip curled at the end darkly, slithering a palm above her hand and I notice she visibly coils from his touch. "Your knack for coming to his defense never ceases to amaze me, wife." He grinned wickedly, and she shrouds with an unease, adverting her gaze from all the curious eyes.
"When it comes to your safety, I must follow what is right." Gunter continues, "Especially since there are many more mishaps to come in the future. With that crown on your head, the red mark on your back only grows darker, and for that I will double the guards."
"King Gunter that is far too generous." An elite aside him disrupts. "I have plenty of guards in the Russian military who are far more advanced and professional than what you have here." He lazily wags a hand, his expression void as he puffs a cigar.
I grit my teeth.
"Not necessary Sir Theodore." Gunter finally says after moments of letting the statement simmer. "I learned from a wise King once, and that is to always grant a second chance."
"You are far too kind, King Gunter." Another Elite member on the other side of him praises as he too lifts his arm to puff a cigar.
"It is no trouble at all, in fact, I do this because my wife fancies him the most." He says just as he brazenly shifts his eyes towards her cowering frame and returns back to me a with glare. "Mark my words guard, if we are ever in this position again, there will be no talking." He threatens ominously, and only I saw that ghost grin creeping across his face.
My glare darkens and I clench my fist.
"Your king just offered you a chance and you dare not thank him?" The man known as Theodore spouts.
"These workers lack gratitude," added the other.
The cloud above me only darkens, brimming with a thunderous storm, but all I felt in this moment was the searing burn in my veins, with my finger fidgeting, threatening to shatter their jaws. But when I glanced my eyes towards her, the anger settles. The darkness that shrouds above me moderates, for now. And with a deep inhale my gloom erases and I gaze up to Gunter with a smirk.
