Today was one of those days people were recommended to stay away from Kaylee.
Her mood was down, she became rapidly angry and frustrated at people. Even the sky was gray and bland outside, as she stared out her office window. Not that there was much sky to see, smashed as she was between all of these tall buildings.
This was a side of Los Angeles Kaylee never knew existed until she started working here. To her, Los Angeles had always been about the beaches, the coast and the sun. Not people wearing full suits, faces marked with worry and stress after a day closed in offices in infinite-story buildings. However, that was pretty much her life now. She was one of them.
That thought brought down her mood even more.
"You ready to go?"
At the sound of her father's voice, Kaylee looked up, just before checking the time on her laptop and seeing it was a little past 5 pm. That surprised her, although she was more than happy to get out of there and head home.
She closed the lid on the laptop and jumped from her desk. "Hell yes," she replied and started packing her belongings.
It'd been almost three years since she stepped foot in this office to start working, after her father put in a word for her. It was an IT Company located in the Financial District of Los Angeles. Kaylee started as a trainee in the design team but slowly stepped up the ladder, becoming one of the main collaborators.
Kaylee and her father made their way out of their floor, saying goodbye to some of the their colleagues still working in their stations.
"How are you doing today?" Her father asked as they stepped into the elevator, standing side by side, facing away from the mirror in the back.
Kaylee adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder. A snort was her only answer.
"I get you won't come with us— "
"Nope," she cut off, making clear this conversation was not going to continue.
She would not visit her brother's grave at the cemetery.
She never did on any of the five years that passed.
And today was no exception.
