Chapter 51

She drove confidently, a stark contrast to how awkward she used to be behind the wheel. Heather was clearly showing off, but not in the way straight girlfriends do — more like a femme trying to impress a butch.

Had she always seen me as some sort of manly tomboy? Why does she want me after all this time? That question nagged at me. She radiated an aura of mystery, keeping me hooked.

"So, how's school in the Catholic wonderland?" I asked innocently.

"It started and ended pretty quickly. It wasn't bad, though — just girls. I even dated one of them. Maria. You wouldn't believe it, but almost everyone there is named Maria. For a strict moral school, the girls are not as strict as you'd think."

"So how did you leave this lesbian paradise? It sounds like you were living in an anime like Strawberry Panic."

"My parents are dumb as rocks. They caught me with a girl and sent me to a school with only girls, but then the situation resolved itself."

"You're not telling me enough for someone who wants to regain my trust."

"Alright, alright. Here's the full story. They found a new distraction: divorce."

"Oh." I didn't know what to say. I'd have celebrated my mom's divorce, but Heather had always had a decent and pretty good family (aside from them being homophobes 🤮).

"Don't worry about me. I'm not one of those dumb divorce kids who think it's their fault mommy and daddy don't share a bed anymore. Boo-hoo. I made them think I felt that way, giving them those Puss in Boots eyes, and now they're showering me with gifts so I'll tell each of them privately that I love them more."

"That's kind of cruel, don't you think?"

"It was cruel to send me to a private Catholic school with boring nuns, so they can deal with it. The girl-in-my-room incident is forgotten. I convinced them I just wanted attention and that the private school had no prospects for me, so they pulled me out. Idiots. They paid for me to have fun with the 'shy' Marias there."

"Wow, you're... I don't even know if I should admire your honesty or shake my head like one of those nuns."

"Now my parents are divvying up money and property or something. I don't care. I hinted mom at a fresh start, moving closer to the mountains and nature so her straight and obedient daughter can meet a good, hardworking country boy. Imagine my surprise when I found out we'd be living nearby."

"And where's your mom working now?"

"As an accountant at the Blue Ridge Resort."

Wow! That's the ritzy, expensive part of town near the mountains!

"Lucky..."

Heather parked near my house, which was barely visible through the trees just starting to shed their leaves.

"I'm lucky to have found you again. Fate's given me a second chance, sweet Mel." She leaned in to kiss me.
