Paradise On Earth || JJ Maybank

The distraction

"Pope, we're not stealing the drone. We're borrowing it." John B said to the worrisome boy.
The group of Pogues had gotten back into the van to go to the junkyard for the drone.

" 'Humans are the only animal that can't tell fantasy from reality.' " Pope quoted.

"Wait, did you come up with that?" John B ask.

"No, Albert Bernstein came up with that but it applies to this whole treasure-hunting thing." He explains. "Oh." John b said. "So, which is it? Fantasy or reality?" The boy turned and asked John B who was driving and Kiara who was in the passenger seat.

"Why you gotta be so weird, Pope?" JJ said from the back.

"It's fantasy, but possible reality." Kie answered.
"Reality." John B said which caused the girl to smile.
"Virtual reality." JJ answered as he tried starting his lighter to light his roll. "Keep the signal clear." Pope said as he plucked the weed out of his mouth and threw it in the direction in front of him where Sky was sitting. "Oohh." Sky said as she started picking up the j to smoke until Pope did the same thing to her as he did to JJ, but this time throwing it on the floor. "You're the distraction." He simply said.

"You know what your problem is?" JJ started talking to Pope.
"You?"
"No! It's that you need to relax, man. You're always so tense." JJ said to the boy.
"I'm not too tense." That was the last of the conversation that Skylar heard after she hopped out from the back of the Twinkie. The two girls had started walking up to the gate of the junkyard and Skylar had taken off her jean jacket and tied it around her skirt and taked the bun she had up In her hair down.

"Hello." Kiara yelled to the man that was behind the gate in a small glass office.

"Excuse me? Hi." Skylar called getting his attention.

"Can I help you?" The man asked.
"Hi! Um, we actually have a flat tire. I was wondering if maybe you could help us out?" Kie said with a smile.
"It shouldn't take long." Sky added after seeing the unsure look on the man's face.

"Yeah." The man said.
"Yeah?" Sky said as the man started going around to open the gate. "It's too easy." Skylar mumbled to herself and Kie once the man was away from them.

While the girls were waiting at the gate the boys were hiding out behind some random cars waiting to sneak in.

"How's it going with Kiara?" JJ asked John B. "It's uh- it's not awkward, weird, or anything." He replied. "Yeah. Honestly, I did not think you were gonna actually listen to me. I was 100 percent sure she was into you." JJ said. "Pope would agree." Pope had made a 'I don't know' type sound. "Ehh..." "So, like, Kie, she, like, definitely gave you the Heisman?" JJ asked. "Oh, no question. Yup." "Gotcha." JJ chuckled. "Maybe she's just into somebody else." Pope said which made the two other boys look at him.

"What about Sky? I mean, she gave you a kiss on the cheek, and you had to apologize to her after you talked about her dad." JJ said, which made John B look at his blond friend just to see him totally and completely staring right at Sky. "Hey uh, JJ, you should maybe stop the drool that's comin' from out your mouth." He said, snapping his friend out of his trance. "And maybe stop with the goo goo eyes you're giving Sky." He finishes. "G- goo goo eyes? I don't do goo goo eyes. And I'm not staring at Sky." JJ said, defending himself. "Right?" John b says. "Look I've known Sky as long as I have known you. It's just weird to like her." JJ replied while still looking in the direction of the gate.

"It's just this back one right here." Kie says to the man that was helping them. "I mean, it must've been a slow leak or something." As the gate started closing the three boys made a run for it towards the entrance. "Yeah, it's probably been sitting in the yard too long?" The man asked Kie. "Yeah." She softly answered. "Yeah. I- I got this."
"Thank you." Both of the girls said.

"Got it?" Kie asked the man who seemed close to done already. "Yeah." Kiara winked to Sky who went around the car and bent down and pretended to tie her shoes, when really she was pulling out a pocket knife and twisting air out of the car tire. "Oh, hey, I think I found another leak from this tire." Skylar announced to the worker.

After two minutes sounds of barking were heard from somewhere in the junkyard. "Do you hear that?" The man asked Kiara. "Hear what?" Kie played off as if the barking noises weren't loud. "Oh, Tebows got somethin'." He said standing up. "It's probably just a raccoon or something, maybe. You know?" Skylar quickly said. "Nothin' to worry about." She played off as the man started coming to her side to check out the other tire. "Yeah." Kie spoke softly. Once the man was kneeling down again, Kiara bent down as well and took a sharp hairpin out of her hair to do what Sky had down moments ago.

"What are you doing?" The man asks concerned after seeing what the girl was doing. "This one looks a little low too." She tried playing off but it didn't work and the man started running towards the sound of barking. "Wait! Wait!" Kie spoke. "Shit." Sky said as she went into the passenger seat of Kie's parents car and Kie got into the drivers. As the girl drove around the yard she had seen John B and picked him up not even having time to ask about the equipment in his hands.

"Stealing drones makes you hungry." Kie said as the Twinkie came to a stop in front of her family's restaurant 'The Wreck'. "Borrowing drones." Sky commented from the back trying to calm down Popes worries.

"What I would do to a beer and shrimp and grits right now." JJ says as he gets out the van.

"It would not be pretty." Pope said replying to JJ's comment.

Once the group walked in Kiara and Skylar went towards the counter where Kie's dad was while the boys went towards the corner of the shop where people were eating. "Hey, Dad." Kie said. "Hey." "Hi, Mr Carrera."
"How'd we do?" Kie asked her dad. "Didn't turn it over once." "It's probably just bad luck because of the storm." Kie said while in her hug with her dad. "Yeah, I'll be sure to tell the banks that." Skylar went around to give Kie's dad a side hug. "Guess now is not the best time to ask for free food for our friends?" Sky asked shyly but with a smile trying to convince the father figure in front of her.

"Look at them." He said. "They're greedy pelicans." When the three of them turned the three teens were staring at the food in front of them which made the people feel weirded out. "I thought I told you both to stop hanging around these guys."

"Well, everybody at the Kook Academy hates me, Dad." Kie said.

"Cause you never gave them a chance."

"I did give them a chance. They got all stuck up on me. I mean they care more about shoes than surfing. What am I supposed to do with that?" Kie went on. Sky tried slipping into the conversation. "They're our friends." When the three turned around the boys waved over at them but JJ gave a peace sign which caused the three to chuckle. "Look. Well, I-i gotta throw it out. Might as well take it." He told the girls and they both hugged him. "Thank you." They both said in a squeaky voice. "You're welcome. I'll bring it out."

"Sit down." Kie turned around to the boys to say. Once the words left her mouth each boy released a heavy sigh and quickly walked over to a table and sat down. "Oh, yes!" JJ exclaimed. The boys were given fries, shrimp, grits, and water. Skylar sat next to John B who was currently shoving fries in his mouth. "Do you know how to eat without shoving food in your mouth?" Sky jokingly asked the boy. A few seconds later John B threw a fry at JJ who missed it but Sky who was standing up behind him cleaning up, catches it. "Stop it."
As time went by, Skylar moved seats right next to JJ, and Kie came over and knocked his legs that were prompt up on the table down and then poured him some more water. Since JJ couldn't put his feet on the table, he put his legs across Skylar's thighs to rest them on. Kie had put down the pitcher of water and started moving her hips side to side as she signaled for John B to join her. They both were standing up dancing to the low music that was being played in the lovely closed restaurant. And that's how their night ended.
