chemistry and chit-chats

Sally sat in her seat and tried not to think about her large load of homework. She was only in her fourth class of the day, Chemistry, and she still had three more classes left. She didn't even have lunch yet, her growling stomach reminding her of that fact. As she sat at the desk, a boy slid into the seat next to her. She turned in surprise as her previous chemistry partner moved the second day of school.

He seemed to be cute, unlike all the boys at this school. His brown hair and brown eyes weren't exactly unique, but his smile was so sweet and charming, his dimples prominently showing on his cheeks. But, she hadn't seen him around before, unless he was one of those kids who skipped class all day.

"Everyone!" said Ms. Carroll. The chatter slowly stopped as people turned towards the teacher.

"It took two minutes for all of you to quiet down. Hopefully, that time will decrease as its only September. I expect better from you later on. Now that has been settled, I wish to tell you we have a new student with us. Colton, would you like to tell everyone about yourself?"

"Um, yeah, sure."

As Sally looked around to see who was the new kid, she failed to notice the cute boy sitting next to her moving to the front of the classroom. When he moved forward to the room, then only she noticed he's the new kid.

"Hi everyone, I'm Colton Thomas. I moved here from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. And well, I moved here cause my dad found a new job. So, um, yeah...."

He quickly moved back to his seat as Ms. Carroll thanked him and started talking about the next chemistry lesson.

Sally tried to avoid talking to him as she wasn't a fan of talking while the teacher's talking. But, the guy turned out to be quite the talkative one.

"Gosh, that was so embarrassing. Why do all the new kids have to do that? It's not like there's a law saying all new kids have to be ridiculed in front of their peers. Already, we are being stared at and gossiped about."

"And then my little sister had to whine about how I broke her doll, even though it was already broken. I mean, its eyes were bugging out and it has scribbles all over it. I think it's better off."

"So you're the quiet type, huh? That's okay. We all have different personalities. Who knows? We could become best friends cause opposites attract."

When the ball rang, she was glad to finally not have her ear bleed to death. She'd rather face the loads of homework she had to do later on.

But, lunch came and went quickly. A person can only eat so much in thirty minutes. She only had to wait in the lunch line for five minutes, even though the messed up sludge on her tray didn't make the wait worth it. She sat at the edge of a table filled with a group of ready-made best friends. They didn't seem to accept her, so she passed the time passing the peas on her tray until the bell rang.

As she trudged between classes, she heard various rumors about Colton. He was said to have moved to be a secret FBI agent to investigate the cafeteria food. A boy in her math class said he was dealing out drugs behind the school. Even one of her teachers suspected Colton to be a criminal on the run, searching for a hideaway place. She tried to ignore the obviously bogus rumors, but her mind was worried about how she would face him the next day in chemistry. For now, she thought as she drove home, she will just have to focus on her homework, and leave her worries about tomorrow.

She tried to avoid sleeping in her English class, but the previous night, she barely got any sleep thanks to the stupid homework. As the hallway became filled, she started to gather her things for Chemistry. Suddenly, someone tapped her shoulder. She nearly jumped out of her shoes, and tried to calm herself down.

"Did I scare you? I'm so sorry, but I thought we could walk to class together. If you don't want to though, I understand." said Colton as he slowly stepped backwards.

She quickly stood up and just dragged him to the classroom and to their desk before she slumped in her chair.

"Next time, just warn me, okay?"

"Class, today we are going to have a break period. This isn't going to happen a lot, so don't be too happy. Do whatever you must, so long as it doesn't involve illegal activities or bursting my eardrums." said Ms. Carroll.

Sally's eyes brightened as she had a new story idea she's been dying to write out. As she took out her journal, an all too familiar tap on her shoulder reminded her of the boy next to her.

"What is it?" asked Sally.

He looked at her with puppy-dog eyes and asked,"Can you please talk to me? I need a companion to share my thoughts with."

She sighed and nodded her head. Her affirmation caused him to grin and to start talking about his life story. He let her interrupt with questions about the rumors surrounding him. As she thought, they were completely bogus, and were not at all true. Through their word exchange, she discovered his love of weird jokes, his hatred of extremely windy days, and his adoration of food. In turn, he learned of her love of writing, her hatred of mean pranks, and her complete loathing of rude perverts. They also found they shared a love of Harry Potter, chocolate ice cream, and superheroes.

As the bell rang, Sally was astonished at how much she learned about her science partner through only a hour and a half. As she walked out of the classroom, her partner rushed by her and yelled, "Bye best friend! I'll see you at lunch!" She smiled and walked though the rest of the day cherishing her thoughts of her new best friend and chemistry partner.
