⚠️MENTION OF HITLER, NAZIS⚠️

Walking along the promenade of the MS Saint Luis, I breathed in the crisp sea air. Getting away from Hitler and the Nazis was the best thing to ever happen to us, especially after Papa died....Shaking my head to get rid of the memories, I opened my straw bag and took out my small handheld camera. Taking pictures, my blue flowered dress blowing in the light breeze, my light brown hair flowing down my back, it was the perfect day.
Putting my camera back, I notice a boy with wire-frame glasses staring at me. He blushed and turned away, pretending to look at the water around us. I smiled at him, and walked over. I stood next to him and leaned against the railing. He turned to me and blushed even harder.
"I-I'm sorry, I probably look like a tomato right now, oh gosh, I'm sorry..." he stuttered, fixing his hair.
"It's just that, your so pretty, and I'm not very good with people..." He looked at me with a cute crooked smile and held out his hand.
     "I'm Joseph."
     "Y/N"
I smiled at him and shyly tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. Why did I feel so embarrassed around him?!
"Would you maybe... want to hang out later? How about after dinner, in the ballroom? It might be just us."
His face lit up, and he nodded quickly.
"Okay! I-it's a date! I'll see you soon, Y/N."
He ran off to his room, And I walked off to mine. I barged into the room, mama turning in surprise. "Y/N, please don't barge in like that again. You could have broken something with that force!" Mama said, looking up from her book. Lily and Jackson, my little brother and sister, were playing with some wooden blocks in the corner.
"Sorry, mama, I'm, uh, going out with a friend! I need something nice to wear," I said, flinging clothes everywhere. I finally found my nice dress and rushed to the bathroom to put it on.
In the bathroom, I threw in my dress and grabbed my gold butterfly clip. It was the last thing papa gave me before he died from the Nazis... No! I'm not going to think about such a sad moment. This is supposed to be a happy evening! I looked at my moms blush, and decided to put some on. When I finished, I looked beautiful! I smiled. I was actually content with the way I looked. I grabbed my straw bag and sly it over my shoulder.
"IM GOINGGGG ILL BE BACK SOON," I yelled. I shut the door and ran down the hall and up the stairs to the promenade. I walked for a little bit, and finally made it to the ball room. A few meters from the ballroom, I saw Joseph, in a brown suit and tie. He was checking his watch, and looking around. Finally, he spotted me, and his face immediately turned red. He's fixed his hair and fixed his tie. He walked up to me and took my hand.
"Y-you look...great! No , better then great. Stunning!"
"Thanks, Joseph! You look great, too. Handsome, really!"
Joseph blushed and smiled a crooked smile. I turned a bit pink. His smile was adorable! He led me inside where smooth jazz and soft chatter enveloped us in a warm atmosphere. The song then shifted to a slow number, and people started to couple up and dance. Joseph offered his hand out to me.
     "Care to dance?"
I giggled and took his hand. "Why not!"
We struggled for a minute,  laughing and trying to figure out how to dance in time with the music. Eventually, we fell in step with the other dancers and ended up having a great time! We talked while dancing, getting to know each other and stuff. By the end of the night, I had completely fallen in love with Joseph. We were laughing as we were exiting the ball room, a short breeze pushed the cold ocean air to the ship. (CRINGE INCOMING)
I shivered a little, crossing my arms to keep warm.
"Are you cold?" Joseph asked, turning to me.
"A-a little. I'm fine, though, my room isn't too far away." Joseph led me to a bench not too far away put his arm around me. He took his coat off and wrapped it around me. I looked up at him and blushed. His eyes were so calm, and his smile so kind. Before I knew it, I was leaning up to kiss him. And he actually kissed back! I smiled into the kiss, and when we finally parted, it felt like taking a knife and slicing our faces apart. We both blushed, and Joseph smiled. Gosh, i can't get enough of that smile!
"I should get going," I said, picking myself up and taking off the coat. I handed it to him and he took it. "Are you sure you don't want to keep it? It's quite cold here."
"I'll be fine. Money's tight now adays, so it's best if you keep it."
Joseph smiled slightly, and kissed my cheek. "I think this was already implied, but, would you...wanna be my girlfriend?"
I smiled brightly and hugged him tight.
"I'll take that as a yes!"
We laughed and I hugged him again.
"Thanks for tonight... I'll see you later, Joseph!"
I jogged away, avoiding the cold breeze in the air. I turned my head, and noticed Joseph running his head through his hair, blushing and walking away. I smiled to myself, and returned to my room.
Leaving Germany was the best decision my family has ever made, and after today, I couldn't agree with that more.
