Gloss was the first to snap out of his daze. He shook his head and turned back to Carolina, helping her up from the ground and walking her to the beach. The man was limping as he helped her.
Carolina knew it was because of his calf. After Katniss shot him during the bloodbath, he had been walking on it funny. But every time Carolina or Cashmere tried to help him, he would refuse. Instead, he settled for a makeshift tourniquet out of rope.
Cashmere turned at their movement, following them to the beach as well.
Brutus and Enobaria were at the beach already, sitting on the ground and eating food from a sponsor gift that had just arrived. Carolina perked up at the sight.
"Is that bread?" she asked.
Brutus looked over his shoulder at their arrival and nodded.
"Yeah, they sent us two dozen."
Carolina's stomach growled at the sight. They never ate dinner the night before, and the group was so focused on saving their food after the bloodbath that they never touched a thing.
Cashmere and Gloss rushed to grab a roll from the Capitol tin. Carolina shoved one in her mouth and started to take out the food she had grabbed during the bloodbath. She stared at her water bottle and realized that it was only halfway full and the group were still yet to find a drinkable source.
Carolina tried to take small sips to savor it, but she knew it wasn't going to last much longer. She tried to take her mind off of it by eating the amount of a normal meal, but her eyes kept going back to her water.
After maybe an hour of staring at her bottle, she heard a beeping sound. Carolina looked up and saw a small package heading straight toward her. When it landed in the sand a couple of feet away from her, Carolina crawled over to it and opened it. It was a bottle of water that was about the same size as the one she already had.
Carolina smiled gratefully. It was only a small amount that would last her another day if she rationed it well, but in the arena, a day felt like a year.
Go to 3 o'clock - R.
Carolina read the note to herself over and over again. She had no idea what going to '3 o'clock' meant. It was a time, not a place.
But, it all clicked when Enobaria spoke later on.
"You know, I've always hated District 3 bread," Enobaria started. "But any food in the arena tastes amazing."
Carolina shot her head in the District 2 woman's direction.
"Did the bread have a note attached to it?" Carolina asked slowly.
Enobaria shook her head. "No, it was from an anonymous sponsor."
The moment Enobaria said that, Carolina knew the bread had come from Plutarch.
Finally, she put everything together.
24 rolls from District 3, Carolina thought. She tried to remember the code that Plutarch explained at the meeting. Midnight on the 3rd day. But how were they supposed to know the time?
Carolina's eyes lit up, and her head snapped to Cashmere and Gloss.
"How long would you say the plants all messed with our heads?" Carolina asked. "Like an hour?"
"I don't know," Gloss shrugged. "I don't remember most of it."
"Okay, well what about the vines?" Carolina continued. "We were running from them for an hour, right?"
"Yeah," Cashmere said. "At least it felt like an hour."
"And then the tsunami happened seconds after the vines ended," Carolina thought for a moment before turning to Brutus and Enobaria. "You two were on the beach when the tsunami happened."
