Continuation from last chapter
Jay sped through the quiet streets, his heart pounding in his chest. The stranger's words echoed in his mind, and Liv's desperate voice on the phone only fueled his anxiety. He had to get to her, make sure she was okay.
As he pulled up to Liv's apartment building, he parked haphazardly and rushed to her door. The night was eerily silent, and the soft hum of streetlights was the only sound as he sprinted up the stairs. Jay's mind raced with worst-case scenarios, his pulse quickening with every step.
He knocked frantically, half-expecting Taylor to come out swinging. Instead, the door creaked open, and Liv stood there, looking confused but unharmed.
Jay: Gionna! Are you okay? What happened?
Liv: (frowning) Jay, what are you talking about?
Jay: (bewildered) You called me. You said you needed help.
Liv: (shaking her head) No, I didn't. I've been asleep. Taylor isn't even here; he left after the bar.
Jay took a step back, his mind racing. He glanced around, expecting the stranger to appear, mocking him. But the hallway was empty.
Jay: (rubbing his temples) I... I..Are you sure ?.
Liv: (softening) Jay, are you okay? You don't look so good.
Jay: (looking around) I don't know
Liv: (concerned) Maybe you should see someone, talk to a professional.
Jay: yea.. Sorry for waking you.
Liv: It's okay. Just take care of yourself, alright?
Jay: (forcing a smile) Night
He turned and walked back to his car, his mind in a haze. As he drove back home, he kept glancing at the passenger seat, expecting the stranger to be there, laughing at him. But he was alone.
The drive home felt surreal. Every shadow seemed to shift and move, and Jay couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. The stranger's words replayed in his mind, taunting him, making him question his sanity.
He parked in the driveway, sat for a moment to collect himself, and then quietly slipped back into the house. The familiar scent of their home brought a momentary sense of calm, but it was fleeting. He tiptoed up the stairs, trying not to wake Rhea. But she stirred, sensing his presence.
Rhea: (sleepily) Jay? Where did you go?
Jay: (whispering) Just needed some air. Go back to sleep, love.
Rhea: (murmuring) Okay... love you.
Jay: (softly) Love you too.
He lay there, staring at the ceiling, wondering if he was truly losing his mind. The stranger's taunts and Liv's non-existent call weighed heavily on him. He knew he needed to get a grip on reality before it tore him apart. Eventually he fell asleep.
