Having the day free to themselves due to their sons' youth baseball tournament games being rained out, Bethany and Claire enjoyed a leisurely breakfast together in the hotel restaurant. Coach Callahan had pretty much demanded that Jack serve as a chaperone for the Knights' team outing to a nearby Dave & Buster's arcade and restaurant.
So, Bethany and Claire were free to get to know each other better without Jack as a distraction-in person, at least. Both had a history with Jack, in the past, as was the case with Claire, and presently, for Bethany, that had bonded them almost immediately. Their apprehension and timidity with one another still lingered, if only at the backs of their minds, each wondering which experiences with Jack still remained unspoken.
Jack, for his part, was thrilled that Bethany and Claire seemed to hit it off so quickly. The three of them had enjoyed an evening of intimate conversation under the stars on the hotel's lake-view deck. Claire's version of the story that had led to her affectionately referring to Jack as "Jack Jack" had not disappointed, and Bethany felt a definite kinship with Claire.
The rainout would be a welcome break from the usual hectic schedule that youth travel baseball demands of players' parents. Having no games to attend and no boys to keep occupied, Bethany and Claire were looking forward to a little shared freedom and pampering at the day spa that Bethany had been to on a previous trip. She called ahead and was assured that the spa could get them in despite the short notice. She was excited to spend time with Claire to get to know her even better.
Bethany was curious to learn more from Claire about her unique relationship with Jack in high school and college. The story from the night before left no doubt that Jack and Claire had experienced some intimate moments together despite the fact that they had never dated. Claire's younger brother, Cam, had been Jack's best friend in high school, and Claire had never felt comfortable with the idea of a romantic relationship with Jack. Bethany wasn't sure she entirely believed Claire's apparent hesitancy to date Jack but was eager to hear more about it from Claire's perspective.
Claire was still trying to wrap her head around this unexpected, but welcome, reunion with Jack. She never expected to run into Jack at a travel ball tournament, much less spend an evening together sharing intimate details of their past with Jack's girlfriend. The chance meeting between Jack and Claire the previous day when their sons' teams were playing each other had caught them all by surprise. It had been more than a decade since Claire and Jack had seen each other, back in college, and it was evident to Claire that Jack had never discussed her with Bethany, until now.
Claire was surprised at just how quickly and easily she and Bethany had connected, though she supposed it was natural given their common affection for Jack. What could have started out as a cat fight was quite the opposite, and Claire was grateful to be welcomed so warmly by Bethany.
As they sat together in the backseat of their Lyft to the day spa, Bethany raised a question that had puzzled her since Jack first explained his relationship with Claire. "So, Claire," she began tentatively. "I know Jack wanted to ask you out when you were both in high school." They had covered some of that story the night before. "Was there ever a time when you thought 'Hmm, maybe I should go out with this guy'?"
Claire had, indeed, had that thought many times, but each time had convinced herself it could never happen. She chose her words carefully. "You have to remember, Jack and my brother were best friends. When I first met Jack, my sights were definitely set on upperclassmen, not my little brother's baseball buddy."
Bethany watched Claire look out the rain-streaked window as the storm outside still raged. Claire appeared to be envisioning these moments from the past that had shaped her relationship with Jack.
