Amelia met Adelaide in the main Foyer after Adelaide finished her shift and the two sisters gave each other a much needed hug. Neither sister would admit how much they were in need of the hug but secretly the other knew, they always knew each others next move sometimes before the other made it which was one reason Amelia was curious about her sisters son.
"How was your shift?" Amelia asked after they pulled away from their hug, Adelaide shrugged simply.
"I got to scrub in on an open heart Surgery and Dr. Yang let me close and she said I had potential in Cardio, she doesn't normally compliment us like that" Adelaide smiled, she couldn't get over the face that Cristina had complimented her on her work.
"Get up to anything else?" Amelia asked as they headed out to Adelaide's car.
"Nothing much, just charts and scut work" she shrugged, she didn't think it was interesting so she didn't bother going into details about her day. Adelaide unlocked her car and the two sisters got into the front.
"Where would you like to get dinner from?" Adelaide asked not bothered what she had as long as it wasn't anything spicy since she HATED spicy food with a pure passion.
"How about Pizza or Chinese food?" Amelia suggested, she knew how much Adelaide loved pizza and could guess that Adelaide was going to choose Pizza.
"Pizza sounds good. I've found an amazing pizza place that I think you'd like ROCCO's and trust me, they are amazing" Adelaide exclaimed as she gushed about the restaurant.
"How can I pass up the opportunity to get pizza from this place if you love it so much" Amelia laughed lightly. After the two of them had agreed to pizza from ROCCO's Adelaide programmes the address into her satnav and began driving.
"We pass a target on the way to the restaurant so we can pick up the ice cream before hand.. we can both go in or one of us can stay at the car" Adelaide said as she remembered the route but only slightly.
"I'll go in. Any particular flavour ice cream?" Amelia asked, she didn't know if Adelaide's favourite ice cream was still chocolate or if it had changed over the years so she knew it was best to ask.
"Cookie dough or chocolate. Either fine with me" Adelaide answered her older sister with a smile, she loved Cookie Dough ice cream especially if it's Ben and Jerry's.
"How about I get one of each and we can share them?" Amelia asked to which Adelaide nodded eagerly, she was excited to have a catch up with her sister. Adelaide hasn't got to LA to visit Amelia in over a year as she had been pushing herself harder than ever during Med school. Adelaide pulled into the parking lot of target and she parked close to the entrance so Amelia could go in and out easily.
As Amelia left the store with the two tubs of ice cream Adelaide started the car engine again and as soon as she was in the car and had her seat belt on Adelaide began the journey to ROCCO's. Amelia and Adelaide randomly sang along to songs that came onto the radio until she finally pulled into the parking lot at the restaurant.
"So what should we get?" Adelaide asked as they sat in the car park for a brief moment. The two sisters decide to get a half and half pizza to share with a chicken side. The half and half pizza the sisters chose was simply cheese and half meat lovers. Adelaide went in to order their take away before heading back out to the car where she waited by her car while having a mental debate with herself on what important things she needs to tell Amelia about the pregnancy.
Adelaide and Amelia arrived at Adelaide's apartment and made themselves at home almost immediately. In the background they chose to put Friends on, just for some background noise.
"I've missed you Lia" Adelaide said to her sister earning a playful glare from the older shepherd because of the nickname. The two sisters always called each other by the nicknames that they only allow each other.
"And I've missed you Layne. Calls just don't cut it but you do know you are always able to talk to me. About anything and everything" Amelia reminded Adelaide who nodded as she took a bite of the slice of cheese pizza she had.
"I know and that's why I've decided that I'm going to tell you everything. Your the only one who I've always been able to talk to" Adelaide admitted
"You don't have to. I want you to know that Layne" Amelia reminded the younger woman who nodded.
"I know" Adelaide nodded biting her lip anxiously.
"I was reckless, I know that. When I found out I was pregnant with Connor I knew mom would be disappointed and I knew I had to get away. I dropped out of school like you know and I ran away, I enrolled in a new school under the name Kori Shepherd and I prayed mom wouldn't have found out, I was lucky that she didn't. I was sleeping in shop doorways, using the school gym changing rooms to shower until a teacher took me in, she knew everything and her husband understood that she didn't want me sleeping on the streets while pregnant. I gave birth in the school with the teacher by my side after breaking in late at night." Adelaide began explaining to Amelia who let Adelaide talk. If Adelaide was honest she was feeling more anxious now telling Amelia the story of her child than she ever was when she began her intern year at the hospital.
"I never had any prenatal care, I didn't want anyone finding out I was pregnant... especially not Austin, I feel like he was half of the reason to why I was reckless. I thought he loved me and I thought I loved him but I also knew that I couldn't tell him that I was pregnant because he was controlling, possessive and I didn't want him to have a say in what happened to the baby because I knew it had to go into care if I wanted it to have the life it deserves. I couldn't give it to him." Adelaide said looking down, she only looked up again when Amelia placed her hand on her knee to comfort her. Adelaide felt sick as she thought about the baby she gave up.
"I named him Connor but I don't know if he still is called Connor because it's not like I even did a birth certificate. But he deserved way better than a reckless 16 year old. I hadn't even graduated school and I still was determined to go to med school. I hadn't even thought about him until Kathleen and Mom called me questioning me about him. I don't know how he and his parents found mom, I don't know why he wants to find me and I don't think I want to see him." Adelaide said looking up to Amelia who nodded as she listened.
"Is that selfish? Am I a bad person for saying that I don't want to see him" Adelaide asked as she felt tears in her eyes, she knew if she told Derek, their mom or their older sisters that she didn't want to see her son they would try and force her into it and she never wants that. If Adelaide was honest she thought she would most certainly resent everyone who tried to force her into meeting Connor.
"You aren't selfish. You are thinking of your own mental wellbeing. I know you Layne, I know you would resent Connor, you would resent Mom, you would resent everyone who tries to get you to meet him and in the end it's your choice. You don't have to do anything you don't want to" Amelia said with a small smile as she tried to reassure Adelaide that everything was up to her.
"If I told anyone else this they would not be happy. Everyone wants to know all about him but i feel like they aren't even thinking about me. Maybe I did wrong by never telling anyone and running away at when I fell pregnant but I was protecting the baby from Austin and myself" Adelaide sighed, Amelia nodded as she understood where Adelaide was coming from. She would have done the same thing if she was in Adelaide's position as a teen.
It was getting late when Amelia and Adelaide finally finished talking about Connor and everything that happened when Adelaide left home. Amelia promised not to tell the family until Adelaide felt ready too and if needs be she will tell them for Adelaide. The two sisters headed to bed at around 12am which Adelaide was sure she would regret because she could hardly ever fall asleep quickly, maybe once in a while she would but it was highly unlikely that she'd fall asleep within seconds. Adelaide tossed and turned for what felt like hours before she eventually fell asleep.
Her night sleep wasn't exactly peaceful as question after question ran through her mind, she wondered if she should actually want to see her son but then she would think that she would resent him or what if it turns out she loves him so much that she won't want him to go back with his parents, she had no rights after all. The youngest Shepherd was torn between all her emotions and didn't know what to do, she was questioning if her initial feelings was the right one.
