A space obsessed high schooler who just wants to be loved.

//3rd POV//

Alex has always had a fascination for space, that's no surprise to anyone. It's almost all he talks about anymore, whenever he does speak. Over the months he's gotten quieter and quieter, even quieter than his friend Zach who almost never talks. If you've known Alex for longer than these six months, you would know how odd this is. He was the life of the party, the first to start a conversation with any willing stranger or friend.

This is all why it's also no surprise that when Jack Barakat comes over to check in on Alex at night, the first place he finds him is the roof of his house looking into the stars.

Jack says nothing, Alex doesn't turn around when he hears him coming. He's the only one that would come to see him so often.

The black haired boy sits down next to his best friend, watching him stare into space. Well, what they can see of it anyways. He watches him for a while, wishing he could read the brunet's mind. He's worried about Alex, it's been driving him insane.

"Anything new up there?" Jack starts with, space being his best bet for getting Alex to talk.

The brunet blinks a few times before shaking his head, "There's always something new, I just can't see it from here."

Jack nods, tilting his head as he thinks of something else to ask. To his surprise, Alex is the one who speaks up again.

"I wish I weren't so far from the moon," Alex whispered, "Then I could see so much more." He bit his lip, wearing an easily readable expression of yearning. "I want to go to the moon. I want to live in the stars."

Jack scoots closer so that their legs are touching, doing anything he can to reassure him of anything. He's never understood what Alex meant by these things. "...You don't want to be here?"

This caught Alex off guard, turning his head to look at Jack. "I do, I-" Looking to his best friend was a mistake, sparking emotions he didn't know he felt so deeply, regret that he didn't want to feel.

Alex quickly looked away, this time at the ground.

"I do want to be here, of course I do." Alex shrugged, blinking away the tears before they even threatened to spill. "I don't know how to explain it." In truth, he knew exactly how to, it's just something he couldn't. "I know I've been different, but I've just been dreaming too much, y'know?"

Jack sighed, "Alex, please don't shut me off." He took the boy's hand. "I'm your best friend, you can tell me anything and I'll always be here for you."

"I'm telling you, I don't know how to explain it!" Alex's tone was strained, he was frustrated. He took his hand from Jack, looking up to the stars. "So stop making me try, things are okay like they are now."

"Damnit, Alex." The raven haired boy ran his hand through his hair, sharing the other's frustration. "I love you, dude. I know things aren't okay with you, I just wanna help." He kept his voice as calm as he could, but the sharp edges had shown through.

Alex didn't acknowledge his words, knowing it would just be an argument if he responded.

This pissed Jack off though, so he made a move to leave, but Alex swiftly grabbed his arm.

"Don't go." He whispered, his words shaky. "I'm sorry, please don't leave me. I'm scared."

Jack's bitter mood instantly dropped, he didn't hesitate to stay seated and pull his best friend into a tight hug. "I won't leave." He assured. "I promise. You're safe."

Alex whimpered, cuddling up to Jack as closely as he could, gripping onto the boy's jacket. His eyes were shut tight, it was taking everything in him to stop himself from crying.

"I'm right here, Lex."

"I can't stay here, I don't wanna stay here." Alex's voice cracked and that was enough to break him, erupting into loud sobs. "I don't wanna stay, Jack!"

Jack's heart shattered, he didn't need to hear anything more to know what he meant by that. "Don't you dare join the stars yet, I promise you things will be okay, I'm right here, please just tell me how to help you." He was on the verge of crying himself, but he had to stay as strong as he could for the broken boy. "I don't want you to leave me either.."

"I don't wanna feel all these things, Jack! It's- fuck- I can't deal with it anymore! I don't want any of this!" He sobbed, "It's too much.. it all just hurts. I wanna be happy again..." Alex let out a small cough, choking on his jagged breath.

"I'll make you happy again, Alex. I swear it. I'll make you happy, please, tell me how. You don't have to deal with anything anymore! Fuck! I'll do literally anything for you! I love you! You're all I have! I'll give you the fucking moon, I'll find a way!" Jack's desperate voice flooded Alex's ears. He meant all of it. Alex knew he did.

"You're too far from the moon..." Alex whimpered. "I don't know how to be happy, Jack.. I need this to stop... please. Make it stop. I wanna be loved. No one will love me, Jack."

"I told you I love you, Alex." Jack moved one hand up to the back of Alex's head, holding him. "I fucking love you, I'll show you how to be happy again. I promise you, Lex."

"No..." The brunet hiccuped, "I want real love. I'm so fucking alone, it's pathetic. I just wanna know how it feels... and now I don't even love myself. How could I...?"

"Alex..." Jack started to pull away, but Alex clinged onto him. "Alex." He forcefully pulled himself away, moving his hands to hold the brunet's face as gently as possible. "Why else do you think I'm here?" He laughed softly. "I quit my job to check up on you every night. I have failing grades in school because I'm always worrying about you. I bring an extra lunch for you because I need to know you eat something every day. I talk to you as much as I can to try to make you feel less alone. I've done everything I can for you and I will for as long as I can. I love you. You aren't alone, Lex."

Alex's eyes must have widened twice in size, his mouth falling open. He had no idea how he felt. He wanted to believe him, but he was terrified he was just saying this. Alex always had hope though, only when he saw it was available, and for so long it wasn't. He had found his hope in the stars, thinking he'd feel loved in death with the universe. That maybe then it would give him everything. It already had though, and he hadn't even known it.

"I love you." Jack repeated, anxiously waiting.

Alex swallowed thickly, mustering up the courage to say anything.

"I'll give you all of the stars, Lex. We'll go to the moon. I need to see you smile again. I love you."

The brunet was too scared to say anything, so he leaned in instead. He leaned in and pressed his lips to Jack's, who instantly let them connect. He did love him...
The kiss was soft and slow, as gentle as it could be. Jack showed him the way, taking it at Alex's pace.

When they broke apart, they just stared at each other, almost in disbelief. Out of fear, Alex quickly spoke, "Please don't leave."

Jack just smiled, "I won't."
