"Raine are you ready yet?"  Miranda asked.

No. ( She wanted to yell back)

This time she screamed her name "RAINE!"

"Coming."

Raine yelled as she put down the brush.  She took one last glance at herself.  Not to bad.

Makeup does wonders.  You could hardly see the ugly purplish blemish on her cheek.  Raine needed a few moments to herself.  It seemed as if her Mother was always around.  Her life had reversed and she was now the child again.

Freedom was so short lived for Raine.  Here she was back in the house, that had never resembled a home.  Living with a woman that has the impersonation of a Parent down pact.

"Its about time Raine.  I've been calling you for the past ten minutes."  Her Mother expressed her annoyance.

"I know Mom, I just wanted to look nice for you is all."

Lies. (Oh the sweet lies.)

"Turn around." She demanded.

Raine turned slowly.  The was her routine she'd get dressed and Miranda would inspect her clothing.  Everything had to be up to her standards.  Raine bit back a groan.  It was always about her.

The floral print dress she wore was not to her liking.  Hell, she didn't even like dresses at all.  Raine always liked jeans and T shirts.  Which in her Mothers opinion made her look like one of those "Butch" girls.

"Mr. Merrison will be here soon."

"You look lovely dear, now go set up the tea tray.'  Raine was dismissed.

She hardly minded.  All of the chores that she had her do on a daily basis, just gave her time to think.

"Yes Mother."

Silently Raine made her way to the kitchen and started the tea.

"Mr. Merrison will be here soon." She mimicked.

Fuck him!  He was suppose to me a man of God.  A Deacon of her church none the less, yet he visited Miranda faithfully.  The first Friday of every month.  Her Mother claimed to be so busy that she could not attend service on Sundays.  Mr. Merrison dutifully came to Miranda's home, to give her Communion.

...and sex.

...and fondle Raine.

He had been coming to see her for years now.  Raine remembered the last time that she had seen him.  It was just before she left.

"Raine God says you must obey any man of the cloth."  He would always tell her.  She had resisted his advances.  He would visit then visit her Mother.

Raine laughed out loud. Then he would find his way back to her.

Of course it wasn't hard.  She was to remain in her room while they "Visited."

Shortly after leaving Miranda he would come to Raine.

She had grown accustomed to her many "Uncles."  So, he was not so different to her.  Except that Raine could not wrap her mind around the God thing.  Mr. Merrison would spew a few bible verses at her and then he would fondle her.

Up until she was 17.  Then he expected more from her.  Raine was to take her Mothers place.  She couldn't let that happen again.

The kettle sounded and she took it off of the burner and sat it on the wooden tray.  Pretty China cups were faced down with dainty spoons hooked between the handles.  Raine heard the door bell chime off in the distance.

"Raine."  Miranda yelled.

Her tone reflecting the importance of her guest.  She lifted the tray and once again one word flashed in her mind.  Poison.  Could she do it?  Raine had done some research on the internet about rat poisons.  She'd  even bought some.  It was tucked away in her room, hidden behind her dresser. Could it be as easy as they make it seem on TV?

Knowing her luck, it wouldn't work and then she'd just end up getting caught.

You have your Jails and your Prisons.  Rehab facility's and such.  Her Mothers house was all of those things rolled into one.  Rain'es goal was to escape.

Wasn't that every prisoner's dream?

Raine entered The parlor silently.  Sitting the tray down on the sideboard.

"Anything else Mother?"

Her thin lips stretched into a frown.

"Have you no manners Raine?  Say hello to Mr.Merrison."  She scolded her.

"Hello Mr.Merrison."  Raine said with a slight hint of attitude.

"Raine don't you just look as beautiful as ever."  His eyes traveled up and down the lenght of her body.  Forcing her into a place that she didn't want to be in mentally.

She cringed inwardly.

"Would you like me to serve the tea?" She directed the question to her Mother.

"Of course I do Raine."

The frown had been replaced by a strained smile.  As with most of her smiles the joy never reached her eyes. Raine had often wondered if she had ever experienced true happiness.  Then again people like her, people that were so fucked up weren't ever happy.

Unless they were making someone else miserable.  Maybe this is where her happiness was derived from.  Raine's pain.

She served them their  tea and was just ready to leave when Mr.Merrison spoke.

"Raine wont you join us?"  He looked at her and winked. Before she could answer him her Mother answered for her.

"She'd love to Ronald.  Have some tea Raine."

So, Raine sat down opposite them on the other sofa.

Mr.Merrison chucked.

"I don't bite.  Why are you sitting so far away?

Come sit between us Raine, its been so long since I last saw you."

She would rather slam her finger in between a door purposely then be anywhere near this man.  He patted the spot next to him and made no attempt to scoot over.

Raine got up and gingerly sat down between them.  Her shoulders pulled in tightly, her hands on her knees.  They started a conversation as if she weren't even there.

Mr.Merrison's hand traveled to her upper thigh and he gave it a good squeeze. Raine brushed his hand off of her leg, like you would a pest but he just did it again.

She turned her head and looked at her Mother.  Giving her looks to express her discomfort. She knew that she noticed them yet, she continued on with her conversation.  Pretending that this was normal.  That not a damn thing was wrong.

After the tea was gone.  Raine stood up to make my getaway.  She collected all of the china and placed it back onto the tray.

"Raine."  He called out to her.

"We need to get together and have a special prayer meeting.  Anything that is on your mind we can discuss."  She glared at him and turned up her nose.

"It will bring you closer to God, isn't that right Miranda?"

"Indeed it will Ronald."  Her Mother agreed.

"She needs him in her life.  The Child is a natural born sinner."

"Take the tray back to the kitchen Raine and then go to your room.  I have a few things I need to discuss with Mr.Merrison.  Private matters."

Raine nodded and left the parlor as quietly as she had entered it.  She was certain of one thing. That man would get her no closer to God.

Not today..not ever.
