Part Thirtythree

Today was the day Raine was to be married.  She had stopped calling Dr.Gregg last week.  What she really needed was peace of mind.  Just some time alone. That did not happen.

Her Mother had been on her non stop, although she was still playing nice, there was always that undercurrent of evil.  Then there was Thomas.  So sweet yet not giving her a moment to change her mind.

She had thought that she would become un robotic.  That for once she would take control over her own life but she was weak.  It was so much easier to just go ahead with things.

Maybe if she was lucky, Thomas would take her out of the country.  A new beginning.  She had even thought about having a child with him.  She could have her perfect family after all.  She sat at the vanity in her room.  Staring at her reflection.

A beautiful bride she was.  Happy?  She was not so sure.  Even with her trying to block out all of her wants and desires, her inner most thoughts seemed to peek through.  What was she to do?

Raine held her head in agony.  Her brain felt numb.  She was much too overwhelmed.  “I can’t do this anymore.”  She muttered to her teary eyed reflection.

“What do you mean you can’t Raine?”  Her Mothered entered her room without warning.

“Mother.”  She stood up slowly, elegantly.

“Come now Raine.  You are to walk down the aisle.  Everything is in place.  You should be happy darling.  Thomas will make a great husband.

“I know he will.  I just wonder if he will make the perfect Husband for me.”  She dropped her gaze.

“Oh here we go again.  Stop this right now!”  Miranda screeched.  Grabbing onto Raine’s arm she spun her around and pushed her out of the door.

“Hold up your dress.  I’d hate to see you trip down the stairs.”

Obediently Raine held up her dress and took to the stairs carefully.  Hot tears scorched her cheeks with each step that she took.  Her heart felt like it was going to bust and she felt so alone.

“Now then.  Let me look at you.”  Her Mother fussed with her veil.  Straightening  it out.  I know that you have been blubbering about Raine.  The good news is that no one can see your pitiful eyes.  I do want you to stop though.  You must look radiant when he lifts the veil.”

“Mother… if I go through with this I want to move.  I want to move out of the country. I want to have a life.  I just really want to be happy.  I’ve been through so much…” She stopped abruptly.  Who was she kidding?  Her Mother was the majority of her issues, having caused her the most pain and suffering.

Miranda laughed lightly.  “Of course you do.  I had wanted the same thing once upon a time but Thomas has agreed to living here.  This place is massive and you two will have all the privacy that you need.”

Raine cringed.  He had agreed to this?  When had that happened?  The one conversation that they had,had about it.  He had assured her that he would convince Miranda that them starting off on a new journey was the answer.

Now minutes before she was to say I do she hears otherwise.  Her body began to vibrate slowly at first.  The anger stemming from the soul’s of her feet all the way up to her neck, where her jugular twitched.  Obvious outrage hidden under the lace veil.

“I need to be my own person.”  She spoke very firmly.

“You need to be here.  Under my guidance where I can watch you.  Make sure that you are not disgracing the family...again.  You do not have the most stellar reputation Raine.

Trust me.  All that I do is to benefit you.  If you were not so selfish you would see that.  This is why you could not possibly leave.  You are a mess!  Did you take your medication today?”

“No I did not Mother.”

“For Christs sake Raine!  Please do not make a spectacle of yourself.  I’d rather not suffer the embarrassment.  Do you know how many guests are waiting?  The people of importance that are in attendance?  I can’t believe you would do this to me.”

Sheer panic laced her voice.  She looked at her dainty gold watch.  “We have less that an half hour.  Go take your medicine.  Wash your face and make sure to put in some eye drops.  I will send Giselle up to touch up your makeup in fifteen minutes.”

“Fine.”

Her satin dress twisted around her legs as she turned abruptly.  Eager to get away. As she took the steps she smiled to herself.  The medicine that the Doctor had prescribed to her, did make her feel better.  She was callous by not taking it.  How could she have forgotten?

“I did not forget.”  She reminded herself, once she was back in her room safely. She had not wanted to be diluted.  The medicine tended to fog her brain and she had wanted to be alert.  All day she had been waiting on the butterflies.

Those little tickles of excitement that were often associated with wedding bliss. She had felt none.  Carefully she lifted her veil.  She could not fail.  She could not anger her Mother.  Raine knew that she must make her happy.  Her own happiness depended on it.
