Angelica and I ventured into the forest, our hearts pounding with a mix of fear and excitement. The dark woods seemed to close in around us, every rustle and snap of a twig making us jump. The air was thick with the earthy smell of damp leaves and moss, mingling with the faint scent of pine. The moonlight barely pierced through the dense canopy, casting eerie shadows that danced and flickered, adding to the atmosphere of dread.

"Are you okay after this morning's incident?" Angelica asked suddenly, breaking the silence.

I glanced at her, surprised by the concern in her voice. "Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks for asking. I didn't know you were worried."

She sighed, looking ahead. "I wanted to talk to you earlier, but I was scared Derek would hurt you again. He can be such an ass."

I was taken aback. "So, you really care, huh?"

Angelica nodded. "Of course. It seemed like you and Laurine were getting close already."

I shook my head. "Nah, there's nothing between us. We're just good friends. She was in my tent that night because... well, she needed someone to talk to. That's all."

Angelica smiled softly. "I figured. You don't seem like the kind of guy who gets laid with a girl he just met. I'm just glad you have a few friends now."

Her words made me happy. The misunderstanding cleared, we resumed our search for the golden flags, our flashlights casting narrow beams that barely illuminated the path ahead. Suddenly, a noise came from behind the bushes, freezing us in our tracks.

"What was that?" Angelica whispered, her voice trembling.

I held my breath, straining to hear over the pounding of my heart. The forest seemed to hold its breath with us. Faintly, I thought I heard a low growl, but then, a couple of other students emerged, laughing and joking as they searched for flags.

"False alarm," I muttered, my heart still racing. Still, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was watching us from the shadows.

We continued walking, but the ground was slippery from the recent rain. The wet leaves squished under our feet, releasing a pungent, earthy aroma. Out of nowhere, Angelica's foot slipped, and she tumbled into me. We both fell, with me landing awkwardly on top of her. My heart pounded, and our faces were just inches apart.

"I'm so sorry," I stammered, trying to get up. But my hand slipped again, and I fell even closer to her, my face turning beet red.

"Don't panic," Angelica said, her voice calm despite the situation.

I managed to get up slowly, apologizing a hundred times. Angelica tried to stand, but winced in pain. "I think I sprained my ankle," she said, her face contorted with pain.

I was worried. I couldn't just leave her there. After a few minutes of brainstorming, summoning all my courage, I lifted her into my arms. It was awkward and nerve-wracking, but I couldn't let her down. My mind raced with thoughts of Derek punching me again, but I pushed them aside. Helping Angelica was more important.
