You may or may not have noticed the lack of police in the story you've just read. I can assure you that is deliberate. In the UK, domestic violence and stalking has not been taken too seriously until only very recently when women have lost their lives to abusive ex-partners.
I personally know a woman who was subjected to repeated accounts of her case details being 'misplaced' or 'lost' which is where my inspiration came from for Louisa's predicament. Regardless of where you are in the world, laws or no laws, money and people in power will always carry more weight than what's right and wrong.
When you've been battered enough and lost all hope, knowing what the outcome will be before you even pick up the phone, it becomes just another level to accepting the abuse.
